Getting ready for my last gaming convention of the year, it's worth looking at what I did since the last convention:

* Wrote an adventure for the con.
* Project manaaged and edited 9 other adventures for the con.
* Wrote a first draft of a novel. Yes, a whole novel.

This is *not* the sort of thing you see in this era, which makes it all the better that we are seeing it this weekend.

"Never spread the lie in the headline" should be a hard rule of 21st century journalism.

Research shows that repeating lies helps to spread them, and people read headlines more than they read stories.
News media has to do better with headlines that present false and unverified public health claims.

We didn’t forget. Support local bookstores during Small Business Saturday and beyond.

The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

Not coincidentally this is a pretty good list of Most Important Companies to Unionize.
The Boston Globe identified the companies in Massachusetts that employ the most SNAP recipients. A key stat: "In Massachusetts, 74% of working-age recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program are employed, half of them full-time."

As Stoppard wrote, and as I contemplate often: “I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little or make a poem which children will speak for you when you're dead.”

The thing that people need to realize is that, on the state level, a lot of Republican lawmakers don't act or think like Congressional Republicans and don't perform as pure toadies for Trump.

Some do. Many don't. I see both in Mississippi.

You can't view state politics through the lens of D.C.
Another Indiana Republican Senator makes it clear he’s still opposing the GOP push to re-gerrymander the state. dailyjournal.net/2025/11/26/s...

If universities would prioritize smaller classes and fewer bells and whistles like third-party technology contracts, a significantly bigger number of PhDs would find a position in higher education.

I do strongly suspect that the pattern of hit jobs, and capitulations, is almost entirely explained by activists on university boards who want to collaborate with Trump against their own researchers and students.

Excellent thread.

I noticed a decline in D&D players’ story cognition in 2021. Stress and trauma reduces cognition. (Serious illness zapped me through 2024.)

Since then, I’ve seen some folks bounce back, but also some real declines in critical thinking in 2025.
And I don't know if the answer is: everyone is too traumatized to do work and we need to reinvent society. Or if it's more like: generations are losing their cognitive abilities and willpower due to destructive technologies. Or: we all have post-viral brain damage. Or: all of the above.
