NHS must use ‘plain English’ and not ‘erase’ women, says Streeting By Ella Pickover and Jane Kirby NHS documents "have to speak plain English", the Health Secre- tary said yesterday as he stressed that women should not be "exclud- ed or erased" for the NHS to be "trans inclusive" Wes Streeting said he did not support language such as "cervical smear tests being advertised just to 'people with cervixes'." He said NHS docu- ments should include "clear" language to en- sure people know when advice or information is being targeted at them. The NHS website says cervical screening is offered to "women and people with a cervix". Streeting (inset) told Times Radio: "The thing that I've railed against is the erasure of women - so when you've got well-meaning but totally misguided attempts to be inclusive of trans people by eras- ing women that, I think, has, quite rightly and understandably, got a lot of women's backs up. "I think it's annoyed lots of us, because you don't need to exclude or erase women in order to be trans inclusive. "There will be women invited for cervical smear tests, and there will be trans men who have a cervix - and we've got to make sure that in NHS documents we speak in plain English, that an- yone who needs to get the message can see it. "That's why I wouldn't support, for example, cervical smear tests being advertised just to people with cervixes - there'll be a lot of people out there with a cer- vix who wouldn't necessarily know, and so you've got to be really clear about what you're talking about, which is women and trans men in this case." Streeting was also asked about the Supreme Court ruling on gender. The court declared that the words "woman" and "sex" in the Equality Act refer to a biological woman and biological sex. Streeting said: "The guidance from NHS England will be issued before the summer. "I think, frankly, employers and service providers across the coun- try are looking at the judgment and reflecting on what it means for services. "I do think biological same- sex spaces are really important, particularly for women and for women's safety, but we also need to make sure that we're providing dig- nity and care and compassion and respect for trans people." The Health Secretary added: "We want to move forward in a way that brings people together, that protects women's rights, voices and spaces and also protects trans people from harm, discrimination and hatred."

Speaking to MumsNet, Streeting said he did not think trans women should use female spaces and his team "is all over this".

He confirmed Labour will bar trans men from female spaces, calling their presence "unpleasant" and said trans women "impact on women's sex based rights".
WS: So I don't think it should be happening, and we’re still waiting for the EHRC guidance, but on single sex spaces, before we get to the gender identity issues, on single sex spaces, more generally, are seeing far too many breaches. I mean, Karin Smyth, the Minister for Secondary Care, is all over this, because even if put to one side the gender identity issues, there are far too many cases of men and women being on the same ward, and it's not appropriate, dignified or safe. So we've got to deal with that. That is often about capacity constraints, resources. So I've got to be honest with people watching, it's going to take time to eliminate that, but the objective is to eliminate it. Then we get onto the gender identity issues. Now I think this is primarily an issue about women's rights, voices and spaces, that's where the real tension and conflict has arisen, and so we've got to make sure that the guidance has real world application. I don't think anyone, for example, would think it desirable for a trans man, so someone who's born female, but to all intents and purposes, you know, hairy arms, beard, voice, identity, then wanders into women's toilets or goes to a women's ward or another women's space. I think that would be undignified and unpleasant for everyone concerned, this is really about women's rights, voices and spaces. That's where I think we've got to try and find a way to make sure that trans women are a space that is dignified and safe and inclusive for them, that doesn't impact on women's sex based rights and spaces…
