The subcategorization/tropefication of popular fiction has been very bad in general, both for authors and readers.
The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

One of the reasons I am not optimistic about the US in the medium term is that the right’s entire political project for the last fifty-ish years has been the destruction of civic virtue while hypocritically whining about the moral decay of society that they have been actively encouraging
The core problem is that in a state, something has to be sovereign - in a democracy, it is the people - and you can design and tinker as much as you like but there is no way to design around a loss of virtue in that sovereign entity.

If the people keep elected maniacs, no guardrails can hold.
one of the things dr schake and i were both wrestling with in this conversation--i think not really conclusively--is how you maintain the norm of civilian supremacy when the civilians are issuing objectively illegal, murderous orders

Zohran Mamdani: "We're gonna make this a city that doesn't just protect trans kids, but also celebrates and cherishes them."

I think it's become more neutral but this reads a bit like walking into an Australian outback pub and going "so, gents, you still all pooftahs in here or have some of you stopped mincing about".

You know what's going to happen, I have to assume you want what's going to happen, you can't complain.
Is this platform still massively against AI or has it moved more towards acceptance?

happy holiday season! any parent that won't accept your queer identity is abusive. this is not nuanced. a non-abusive parent wouldn't demand you to serve their own comfort and desires, especially at the expense of your happiness and autonomy 💕

Seeing how much of the right-wing on Twitter is just bot farms, kinda lays bare how much hate and hatred is a project that needs to be constantly maintained, a fire that needs to be fed all the time lest it go out for a moment, so much time, effort, and resources to keep people angry and hateful.

I think Democrats should double down on trans rights now. It's obvious that most voters don't care about it so you might as well stick with your principles and goad Republicans into focusing on it at the expense of everything else so they're the ones who look like freaks.

Please hear me when I say that

1) these anti-medical woo birth movements have been a primary feeder into anti-vaxx eugenic movements

2) they pre-date the age of social media

3) they exist because we have not addressed medical sexism and specifically obstetric violence

Kathleen Stock has written an article against "abortion permissiveness". She claims abortion requires "justification" saying the state should limit "unacceptable decision-making" by women about their own bodies.

This is who anti-trans activists proclaim as the feminist thought leaders of our time.

Arkansas smells like freshwater basically everywhere, and whether or not you find this a good smell is dependent on where you smelled it first, I find.
What would your state's state smell be?

(Nice answers only)
New Mexico is the only state to have a “state smell”

A bunch of grade school kids said that roasting green chile should be our state smell so their teacher had them write our state Congress and in a shocking display they all came together, wrote the bill, and passed it in a matter of weeks

I think that phone allowing people to simultaneously be flooded with the 99th percentile that is struggling and the 99th percentile that is absolutely loaded breaks brains
Seriously, the Democrats have not led “on the economy” in living memory (sans for 8 months in 2007-08), and it all shifted in the time between Liberation Day and now

Btw I think the synthesis of “phones causing brainrot” and “it’s the economy” may be that phones are making ppl hate the economy

it's because there is a presumption that a child has a moral responsibility to be what their parent imagines them to be. parents don't imagine their children taking medication, thus a child who needs medication is actually breaching this contract with their parent to be Normal and deserves suffering
and ofc i can't help but notice the similarities with anti-trans fearmongering. "people who use MEDICAL CARE early in life tend to go on to use more MEDICAL CARE. isn't this *scary*?!" like the assumption is that medicine is bad and suspect and dangerous. which is a weird assumption!
