The tell that this entire debate is bullshit is that if birthright citizenship were thrown out, the only possible fix to restore it would be to ratify an amendment with the exact language as the current 14th Amendment.
You could write this. Or you could write: “That notion, which has been the rule in nearly every country in the Western Hemisphere for over a century, is grounded in the language of the 14th Amendment.”

Any DOJ/Garland counterfactual also has to reckon with the immunity ruling last year. It doesn’t really matter when or how the cases were brought if that was always going to be the endpoint.

What these Schatz posts say to me is that Dem elected officials like him seem incapable of perceiving the right as a *political movement.* The response to Covid mitigation and the Floyd protests was not a spontaneous reaction...it was a right wing backlash organized by a reactionary movement.
I've never seen such a disconnect between Dem elected/staff/consultants and actual Dem voters.
The latter understand what's going on.
