kinda leaning towards the view that the whole thing was botched deliberately to strengthen Streeting. My prior is that Starmer has been due for the chop but kept on until a way could be found to fix it for wes.
Useful summary of the plot that wasn’t yet, including the mad defence that no 10 ‘needed to show they knew’ what Streeting was supposedly up to. Even if true, why would you choose to show the nation your own colleagues think you’re toast? If you need to deliver a warning why not do it privately?
Why Labour MPs believe that No 10 has only weakened Keir Starmer and strengthened Wes Streeting. www.newstatesman.com/politics/mor...

Sharaa's actual job in al-Qaeda in Iraq was overseeing suicide bomb manufacturing. Amazing career progression.
Has anybody asked the dickheads who spent years squealing idiot abuse at anyone who said the War On Terror was dumb and murderous bullshit what they make of western leaders queuing up to shake hands with Mr Al Qaeda In Syria? I want to hear them blame this one on post-modernism.

worth remembering at this point that the man who started the transformation of the BBC from a public to a state news broadcaster was Alaistair Campbell; and that thanks largely to his efforts the last BBC DG to resign amid confected scandal was Greg Dyke.

some of the stuff you remember as a seventies child...a neighbour getting a waterbed and people queuing down the road to have a go on it. At the other extreme, my gran was still using a mangle to dry the washing.
Ask people what changes were most significant during the 1960s and you usually hear about the counterculture and the sexual revolution. In reality the major change for many families was getting an indoor toilet.
It is genuinely hard for most people to grasp how poor the past was.

interesting long thread on the unfolding of the US's conservative revolutionary period as it struggles to cohere into fully realised fascism.
I've noticed that there isn't much talk here about the current internecine war that is unfolding on the right, spearheaded in large part by Nick Fuentes, Tucker Carlson, and Candace Owens after the assassination of Charlie Kirk. I know this shit is insane and feels bad. But this is a mistake (1/)

army of the grand hegemon told to beg on the streets of allied nation.
NEW: The US Army website for its bases in Bavaria, Germany told its soldiers and employees that it might need to obtain free food from the German government during the US government shutdown.

The Army later altered publication to remove a list of food banks, but we have the original text here:
US Army Tells Soldiers to Go to German Food Bank, Then Deletes It
The initial 'Shutdown Guidance' for the US Army Garrison Bavaria included instructions to go to German food banks.

intense discussions result in Starmer hailing Zohran Mamdami as a 'fellow Arsenal fan' in a weirdly constipated congratulatory tweet. Commenters gibber and hoot, call for his public disembowellment.

“if we don’t look out, the white race will be – will be utterly submerged. . . . It’s up to us, who are the dominant race, to watch out or these other races will have control of things.”

That's from a speech in the book, made at a party. Wonder if this was conscious.

something genuinely bizarre about Starmer tweeting 'I get it' over a comment box full of Musk-poisoned lunatics eagerly discussing the manner in which he should be publicly executed.
Quite why is unclear at this point. Clearly this place is a bit of an echo chamber. It’s just an echo chamber full of people previously inclined to support Labour and half the journalists and think tankers in the country.
I just realised, the Labour Party doesn’t even have an account over here?!

this is such a British class discourse he's explaining. The working class is white and male, because that's the way it was here in most of the labour movement. OTOH, we have had Labour governments so we're not flailing around after guys with Nazi tattoos.
i think i would honestly find this whole discourse more tolerable if people simply said what they were actually saying, which is that they think the Democratic Party is too associated with femininity (and secondarily, with black people) and that they want to correct this
