AUSTIN, TX: Austin Animal Services urgently needs dog fosters and adopters who don't have another dog in the home because they have a highly contagious dog flu on campus and can't exercise the dogs appropriately. Sick dogs will heal faster in homes & unaffected will be safer. Please help if you can!
Posts austinanimalservices Austin Animal Services has confirmed 3 cases of Canine Pneumovirus (CnPnV), a non-lethal but highly contagious upper respiratory virus that only affects dogs. Several dogs are also symptomatic. The virus does not infect cats or humans; however, people can carry it on their hands and clothing and unknowingly spread it between dogs. Like viral infections in humans, these illnesses can be difficult to prevent, which is why we are temporarily adjusting shelter operations as a precaution. Our top priority is keeping the animals in our care safe and healthy! What this means for shelter operations (expected for at least 3 weeks): • Dog adoptions are still available, but only for households with no other dogs • Dog intake is extremely limited to urgent emergencies • Pet meet & greets and intake appointments are being rescheduled for January • Volunteer access to dogs is limited, though help is still needed in other areas of the shelter • Cat surgeries will continue as scheduled • Cat adoptions are not affected Foster homes without other dogs are urgently needed. Dogs recover faster in private homes with less stress and more individual attention. Thank you for your patience, understanding, and continued support.
