New Mexico is the only state to have a “state smell”

A bunch of grade school kids said that roasting green chile should be our state smell so their teacher had them write our state Congress and in a shocking display they all came together, wrote the bill, and passed it in a matter of weeks

My favorite bit of trivia is this, and if you already know it, I find it’s always great to hear it again. As a child in rural France, Andre the Giant was too big to fit on the little country school bus. So his neighbor, Samuel Becket!!!, would take Andre to school in his pick-up truck!

The reason that magnolia flowers are more rigid and less soft compared to other flowers is because magnolia trees belong to one of the earliest lineages of flowering plants, and predate bees. They evolved to be pollinated by beetles, and still are

Lorenzo Music, who was the voice for Garfield on TV, volunteered at a suicide hotline. Distressed callers would get distracted because the person they were talking to sounded like Garfield.

This effort is more important than every AI data center set to suck the life out of your community.
Thousands of rare American recordings — some 100 years old — go online for all to enjoy
The project, which will include some 50,000 songs from private record collections, is a collaboration between UC Santa Barbara and the Dust-to-Digital Foundation.

I’m not fact checking any of these quoteskeets.

I am choosing to believe every last one of them.
Man, everything is so bleak, anyone got a fun fact or little bit of trivia they want to share

Brain is glitching but..

In the Heart of the Sea (maybe too obvious)
Under the Banner of Heaven (evil mormons!)
The Ruin of All Witches (which I'm currently burning through)
Ok BlueSky: what are your favorite history books in terms of sheer page-turning, narrative propulsion? Thinking along the line of Killers of the Flower Moon, etc. Nonfiction chronicles that read like novels or movies.

The quoteskeets here are going to annihilate my reading list.
There will be no hope.
I will be buried under books forever.

Idiots lament their idiot king
Joe Rogan and Theo Von slam DHS for using Von's image in a video promoting deportation:

"I was like, oh my God, what the fuck are they doing? That's not how you envision the government."

"They were making, like, deportation hype videos with trap beats and shit. What are we doing? It's idiocracy."

This might be an unpopular opinion but what this baby seal is doing is very special to me, personally.

This is my baby, Frankenstein Lockjaw. I love him.
This rules, this is the way to name a kid. Stop all the bullshit with baby name gurus and just pick the two movies you went to last, pick two characters in those movies. Boom you’ve got a kid named Zora Galactus, you were never gonna pick a name that good Hollywood did it for you.

you know who was a real political reporter

a Denver Post writer whose name you don’t know and I don’t even remember despite being fairly sure we were Facebook friends at one point

her name was never the story

but a friend once saw an elected official HIDE UNDER HIS DESK when she entered the room

Somehow I don't think the party of parents who put their pre-teens in child pageants is going to be particularly bothered by the Epstein files. More and more I think the appeal of Pizzagate/Qanon was the revelation of Satanic rituals not pedophilia

Oh cool gonna have fresh relevant new connections to make for my US history students when we get to this later in the year. 😬

The whole “Rise of Fascism” part of history class has a different sort of feel.
VP JD Vance is now fully embracing the 1924 racist National Origins Act to justify his administration’s white nationalist immigration policy.

This was such a good read and since I’m a nerd and subscribe to @thebaffler.com I got to read on pretty paper about how reading is so cooked.
“The elites are ecstatic about imagining a vast, uneducated, and unproductive population forced to pay companies like OpenAI to access the written word and to approximate thought.”

Must read piece by Noah McCormack with too many quotaboe lines to select one! thebaffler.com/salvos/we-us...

Using clips of JD Vance to teach students about the word “xenophobia” in class today.
JD Vance: "A lot of young people are saying housing is way too expensive. Why is that? Because we flooded the country with 30 million illegal immigrants who were taking houses that ought by right go to American citizens."

Like what IS the vibe when he gets up in front of a group of students right now? I NEED TO KNOW.
