A lot of delusion happening in that Schumer NYT interview, but this gets to the heart of it: he believes his Republican colleagues will come around and everything will be ok. Absolutely delusional.

We know AT LEAST 2 men on the SCOTUS have accepted massive bribes.
We know AT LEAST 2 men on the SCOTUS have committed sexual assault.
We know one seat was stolen from a Democratic president by partisan extremism.
We know one judge was only wholly unqualified and placed for her youth and religion.

This is a wonderful series about an Alt-History of women in Apollo-era space exploration. Even if you haven't read any of it yet this is a great place to start!

I had it bookmarked to pledge sometime, but seeing the count at 999, I needed to get in there now and claim 1000th backer status!! 😎

The strangely American idea that we deserve all the bad things that happen to us (because, God) is up there with racism as the reason why there's so much push back here about having a gov that actually invests in creating a prosperous, safe, and stress-free society
(This also explains why there’s a lack of forward motion on spree killings, vaccines, food safety, you name it. “They must’ve done something,” covers all manner of inaction. If everyone deserves everything bad that happens to them, then why stop bad things from happening? Why get in the way?)

I like Gretchen Whitmer but every single Democratic candidate must answer how they are winning over Black voters or they are incapable of winning the primary, let alone the general. I don’t know why I keep having to say this every cycle since 2008 but for some reason white people aren’t listening 🙃
She’s probably the front runner right? Kamala doesn’t have any momentum, Gavin Newsom is a weird lizard man, Pritzker seems ok but will probably have to summon all his oaf energy to stop Fetterman from running for President with Tulsi Gabbard, it’s Gretch time
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan wants to get President Biden re-elected, but is hopeful that in the next race for the White House, “someone from my generation is ready to take the mantle,” the 52-year-old said. Read more or listen to “The Interview.” nyti.ms/45xJJc9

This was one of the favorite tactics of southern segregationists governments. It’s why freedom riders buses were bombed and so many organizers were disappeared and murdered. It’s ‘good’ (effective) if the state’s goal is to let civilians do the dirty work of eliminating dissident
there are a lot of ways for the state to suppress dissident speech. one particularly bad one is by having armed agents of the state stand by and do nothing while partisan-aligned thugs or paramilitary groups beat you because of your speech, and then have the DA decline to prosecute the assaulters.
LA's District Attorney George Gascon has declined to charge Edan On, the man who injured several people in an hours-long brutal attack on UCLA students' pro-Palestine encampment last month. On was featured by name in a CNN report after his mother celebrated his crimes. www.cnn.com/2024/06/21/u...

Good short thread (go click thru and read it), but this post is worth extra highlighting because it so blatantly shows how real estate is can be seen as a solid investment and employees are not.

And if you read that and thought, "Well, that's true. What's the problem?" You are the problem.
They tried to force a return to the office that couldn't work anymore, to maintain their gigantic 7 floor building in one of the most expensive cities in America, and promised that they wouldn't lay people off-

They kept the EMPTY BUILDING and laid everyone off.

*constantly screenshots example of the toxicity and misery*

*brings screenshots over here because we were just dying to know how it was going*

Imagine the deep moral vacuity you'd have to have to use the phrase "shouldn't have" here. Like it was somehow WRONG or IMMORAL for creative people to get paid for their work. Work that OpenAI has pirated to fuel their immoral, unethical machine. Deeply, deeply repugnant worldview.
In an interview, OpenAI CTO Mira Murati says "some creative jobs maybe will go away" due to AI, "but maybe they shouldn't have been there in the first place" (Kate Irwin/PCMag)

On that note:

Trans authors (I mean authors who are trans, NOT cis people who write about trans people), drop your book links here and I'll try to repost as many as I can throughout the day.

Cis people: Repost trans authors' book links.

Cis people who want to complain about being excluded: gtfo
Being a trans author is fucking weird right now. Hell is actively unfolding all around us but I still need to be like, "hey, everyone, wanna buy my silly little queer book? It won't make anything better, but it's kinda fun?"

So....hey, everyone, wanna buy my silly little queer book?

1/ Reminder that violent crime has gone down since the 1960s, and wage theft and civil asset forfeiture have gone up since the 1980s. Cops stole more property than burglars stole in the last five years. More money is lost to wage theft than lost to all violent crimes for the last five years.

Wow, this would be immature in kindergarten.

But an elected state lawmaker, doing this for months, shows just how sad and pathetic the Republican party is.

They are cruel because they are bullies and enjoy it. Nothing any more profound than that. Just pitiful, boring-ass bullies given power.

For matters of science or other expertise, "They have not been able to persuade their peers. That is enough for me to dismiss her claims outright." really needs to be said more.

There are few things as dangerous to knowledge as nonexperts overwhelming a technical debate.
This is an excellent description of the editorial failure behind The NY Times' decision to run Alina Chan's lab leak article.

What's the value proposition to the readership of presenting a one-sided argument that most scientists find lacking? Did no editor bother to ask that question?

I see age discourse has begun again. Until I was 50, I never considered writing or art. In the 8 years since, I have written 13 novels, 30 stories, & raised my art skills from near zero to something well above that. I continue to learn & improve & hope to do so until the day I die. Never too late.💜
