I love all my first lines (I spend an inordinate amount of time on most of them. My second fav is The Stars Are Legion: "I remember throwing away a child") but that GW line does triple duty: character, setting, AND worldbuilding, 15 words. And it fell right out of my head, fully formed. Magical.
This hits hard! I loved the Light Brigade, I definitely need to add this one to the pile.

A luxurious day off today to work on the #wip, a book pushing toward 25k which I am unsurprised to say is now looking more and more like "Platoon meets Annihilation" 😆
As I said aloud while watching Del Toro's Frankenstein, there comes a point in life where you just accept and lean into your kinks

Convincing you to read my novel by the first sentence. Share yours if you want.

Clarion West was clearing out archives and offered scanned copies of materials of mine. This is application letter I wrote when I was 19.
It is dry as old boots.
No wonder I was waitlisted twice 😆

This is a classic blunder in a whole host of industries and professions. What you find is that having a small number of rabid evangelists is a far better route to success than having a bunch of people who give your work 2.5 stars.
Gary Lineker: "This is the mistake the BBC makes. The BBC tries to appease the people that hate the BBC, rather than worrying about the people that love the BBC."

100% this.
If you can't find joy in the act of writing, and feel euphoria after editing several drafts into exactly what your thoughts had in mind (or close to it), then I really suggest you don't become a writer.
The idea, the thoughts, are nothing without execution. The work is the thing.

Sometimes I wonder if our many years of jokes about writers hating writing and doing anything but writing, etc, have convinced people that the writing part is the hurdle and the goal is just to have a thing in hand. But I am here to tell you: the writing is the best part. The act is the thing.

Reading a craft book written by an MFA guy and it's become extremely clear very quickly that he was not taught a lot of basic storytelling principles.

It's currently 36 degrees and it's supposed to SNOW soon, and I'm very excited.
The climbing climate temps mean there have been many years recently where winter only shows up around January. Mild winters mean more fucking garden bugs. I'm ready for the hard freezing to start

Unnecessary roughness. With the sound on, the true seriousness of the conflict is extremely clear.

The book I finished last year won't be out until January 2027 (because, publishing), but I do love that that gives me a luxurious amount of time to work on this new one without thinking about publishing. Turns out I always liked the writing; it was the business I didn't like. But that's capitalism.
I love that you’re writing again. I love that you’re letting us in on your challenges as you’re marching forward. Thank you. Both of these things mean a lot.

Had a moment yesterday where I almost threw out the #wip. Then finished reading God's War and reminded myself how many passes it took to layer all that in. Went back to the #wip, did some world building layering, and felt much better about it. It's the first half that's always the hardest.

Voting! It matters! 😆
And then everyone who didn't vote will complain about the tax increase and the Evils of Big Government 🙃

I will never forget the time I saw a town bond issue for millions of dollars pass with a 100% yes vote...with a total of 8 votes.
The town in question had...a lot more than 8 voters who could have weighed in.
