The first thing I have seen since Twin Peaks the Return that evoked the feeling of watching Twin Peaks the Return. An enigmatic police procedural meets a symbolism-heavy tragicomedy. Impressionistic in style, existential in outcome. Only Kiyoshi Kurosawa could have made it.

Trump spoke at the fucking Libertarian Party Convention in 2024!
i am not going to be tut-tutted by an overwhelming majority of libertarians who have spent the entire trump era sitting on their hands, tacitly approving, or enthusiastically approving virtually everything trump has done

Why are so many platforms punishing adults for wanting to be adults instead of just making parental controls and telling parents to monitor their own kids.

Why is discord rolling out a "teen by default" mandatory ID system. Why the fuck do you need that information. Why are you making this my issue

a good thread on how insidious these book banners are
This is only tangentially connected to me, but stick with me.

In Leander TX, a suburb of Austin, a Dem candidate gets 57% of the vote in a special election for mayor, walloping 2 rightwing challengers. Great news!

Leander is arguably where the rightwing book banning took off. I was a target!
Unofficial voting results show Na’Cole Thompson wins race for Leander mayor
Leander residents cast ballots in the Feb. 7 special election to determine who will be mayor for the rest of the current term, which expires in May 2027.

"In 2021, the French police, who are armed, killed 37 people. In the United Kingdom in 2019, where police are not armed, except for special response units, they killed only three. In the United States in 2022, police killed 1,096 people."

these towns are going to be roughly synonymous with auschwitz/dachau/bergen-belsen/majdanek/buchenwald in about 50 years time if elected dems can't figure out how to shut off the funding for literally all of this. republicans aren't going to magically develop a conscience and change course
In the last month ICE has bought warehouses in:

- Hagerstown, MD: $102 million
- Surprise, AZ: $70 million
- Hamburg, PA: $87 million
- Tremont, PA: $120 million
- San Antonio, TX: $82 million
- El Paso, TX: $123 million
- Social Circle, GA: price unknown

This is unprecedented.

I will never forget the We Wanted A Revolution exhibit. One of the best that Brooklyn Museum has ever put on
I saw Dindga McCannon speaking on a panel with Barabara and Beverly Smith as part of the "We Wanted A Revolution" exhibit.

I still think about it. So much knowledge. So many great stories. And there were women from Kitchen Table and Combahee in the audience who shared stories. Amazing.

The *only* response to this is all the other governors drop out.
Gov. Wes Moore (D-MD) says he was uninvited from a bipartisan White House dinner for governors

"As the nation’s only Black governor, I can’t ignore that being singled out for exclusion from this bipartisan tradition carries an added weight — whether that was the intent or not"

I feel like a really unfun fun fact the general public should be aware of: when you reach out to ICE with media inquiries or for statements, they usually just respond with a list of mugshots of people they’ve arrested.

Children sleep with empty stomachs, and hunger echoes louder than the bombs.

We need food and safety… and we need the world to care.

I've been to some countries where people live under military rule or autocracy. And without fail, one of the questions I get when they ask about life in the U.S. is whether it's true that Americans just let homeless people die on the street.
During freezing temperatures in Port Arthur, Texas, a 61-year-old homeless man was found dead in his wheelchair outside a convenience store.

He was wearing a hospital gown and no shoes. Authorities say he had been released from a hospital the previous day.

This is a diseased society.
