Back in June, I tagged along with the legendary Mira Nair for an afternoon canvass in Richmond Hill. Production delays (by yours truly) kept this from coming out during the election, but we wanted to share this one with you for the holidays. I hope you enjoy it - this is one of my favorites.
In less than a week, I will be sworn in as the next mayor of New York City. It was only possible because of the more than 100,000 people who volunteered on our campaign. Here’s a story about one of them, my mother.

Retail season at the bookstore: after a couple of hours of heavy-duty rush, @gavingrant.bsky.social & I are discussing The Correspondent & how most bookstores are sold out. Did it get a big push, I ask and he says, no, it was a “talky-talky voice-of-book” because he has forgotten “word of mouth.”

Merry Christmas.Today I'm making an urgent appeal for my kids. They have no shelter; the rain and wind have torn down our tent. I'm pleading with you for $150 before it's too late. They are freezing and getting sick.
Please help us urgently

She was fired for teaching what she was hired to teach. She was fired for doing what she did not do. She was fired for breaking a law that does not exist.
Texas A&M University will not reinstate a lecturer who was fired after a video of her teaching about gender identity in a children’s literature class went viral, despite a faculty appeals panel unanimously concluding that her dismissal was not justified.

A vice chancellor upheld the firing of Melissa McCoul, seen in a viral video being confronted by a student on her gender identity teachings, saying the termination was done with “good cause.”

“New York City’s syndromic surveillance system, which collects information about every patient who visits an emergency room, reported 9,857 visits for “influenza-like illness” last week. That was higher than in the worst weeks of the 2017-18 or 2024-25 flu seasons, both ranked as “high severity”

There's been a lot of talk about ghost stories in the run up to Christmas, but one that never gets mentioned is "The Return" (1973). Essentially a 2-hander starring Peter Vaughan & Rosalie Crutchley (cinematography by Douglas Slocombe) it's wonderfully creepy. Avoid reviews: they're full of spoilers

Urgent message
My five kids are freezing. They are shivering in the cold, exposed to the elements, without blankets, food, or a warm shelter. I watch them suffer, helpless to do anything. We urgently need $200 to keep them safe and warm.

Public discourse on this subject has utterly failed to direct citizens' attention to the actual problem, which is that a commercial industry is assaulting education. So every week we get another thoughtless op-ed on blue books or the death of the college essay, etc etc.
