Opinions definitely my own
Almost boring at this point to note the “who knew?!” that is entirely predicated on ignoring vulnerable groups who weren’t just saying this before the last election but before 2016. Trump is the man who tried hard to get a group of innocent black and brown teens executed in 1989. We told everyone.
We did predict it. And we were called alarmist.

Putin pioneered this. No opposition is legitimate. Regular, decent, “ordinary” people cannot possibly be against us because only we represent “the real people.”

Tell-tale sign of authoritarianism.

Also the “I only meant me” in “don’t tread on me”
What’s happening in Minneapolis really drives home the absolute fakery of “brave stands against wokism” brand building pundits have been doing for the past decade

A reminder that we can expect and must demand so more from political leaders—including moral clarity.

I was fortunate to have Ami, a great speechwriter, work with me on several White House speeches.

Read what he would have Schumer say in an alternate parallel universe of courage and conviction 🧵
I wrote the speech I *wish* Chuck Schumer would give tonight - as an actual opposition leader. Here it is:

"My fellow Americans: At this hour, an unrestrained force of militarized and violent federal officers is carrying out a project of ethnic cleansing in the streets of American cities."

I need you all to understand something for those of you who think you know what this black woman who has lived in racist America really thinks. I know this is hard for you all, but some of us saw this coming for years, decades even. So understand, I am not being snarky. I am grieving.

Alex Pretti was a colleague at the VA. We hired him to recruit for our trial. He became an ICU nurse- I lover working with him. He was a good kind person who lived to help and these fuckers executed him.

Alex from our time working together, while he was in nursing school. Later, he moved to ICU, working as a nurse to support critically ill Veterans. He had such a great attitude. We’d chat between patients about trying to get in a mountain bike ride together. Will never happen now

What's happening in MN bears some similarities to the New Orleans Massacre of 1866: an organized group of racists violently punishes a group of (mostly) Black and white folks for the supposed sin of trying to make multi-racial democracy a reality.

We have been told for nearly 30 years that America needed to tolerate mass shootings because the broad availability of guns would help us defend ourselves from an overreaching federal government. That day has come. The people who said this are supporting the federal agents. Many have joined them.

Here's one of the panels that Trump just removed from the President's House site in Philadelphia. (I took this picture of it last March. A couple of weeks later I led a walking tour that included the site.) Does this information "disparage" the United States?

We’ve been in WHO since 1948.
The United States has officially withdrawn from the World Health Organization.

This is a shameful move that puts both Americans and people all over the world at greater risk from disease outbreaks, which require international collaboration to contain.

my Blackest opinion is that the presumption of conflict between "America has a long and deeply rooted history of violence" and "we can and should fight against today's version of that, as did those who came before us" is less a philosophical debate about how to treat the past and more a skill issue

There was a time on old Twitter when I would get online on MLK Day and write a long thread about his radicalism and the defanging and sanitization, his warnings and the quote misusage, and the collective not singular effort. I guess I am old or exhausted because by now I think folks should know.

Incarcerated Americans are at the mercy of prison staff at every moment of their lives. For trans people, this means the attitudes of staff towards the trans community becomes a matter of life or death.

The latest in our series on trans life behind bars, by B Speaks is now live.
Law and Ignorance: The Enemies of Empathy in Prison — Assigned
When it comes to care for trans inmates, the empathy of individual officers and workers often comes into conflict with the law. A problem that is only worsened by a lack of understanding.
