I like the irl usage of “queer” as an umbrella term that welcomes gays, lesbians, trans people, and others

I don’t like this online version where it’s a militant term

No, SARS-CoV-2 is not reducing our intelligence
Why this myth refuses to die

The idea that SARS-CoV-2 infections, or worse, reinfections, are collectively reducing human intelligence does not hold.

Rent is expensive because homeowners act on a local level to restrict the housing supply for their own benefit. Groceries are more expensive because a tight labor market boosted wages for low wage workers. These are difficult issues and taxing billionaires out of existence isn't a magic fix.

Left-wing vs right-wing populism in one picture.

This couldn't have been more perfect. Ignoring tradeoffs and blaming the main outgroup as the solution to every societal problem.

Imagine the commentary on this website if Schumer and Jeffries had exchanged friendship bracelets with Donald Trump.
I really didn't think Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries could look more out of touch. Then the president just exchanged friendship bracelets with Zohran.

Yiddish is so delightful because it’s absolutely normal to say something like “ah this matzo ball soup tastes of the garden of eden”
What’s better than #babka? Learning new words while enjoying it. Here are a few #Yiddish words inspired by BabkaFest, celebrating culture, community, and the traditions that bring us together. What’s your favorite Yiddish word from this list?

People who don’t ride public transit love to be like “look, this small Midwestern city where the bus doesn’t run at all on Sundays and public transit has a zero point two percent mode share PROVES that you can make buses free! If you don’t support this then you are a neoliberal ghoul.”

Imagining Zohran Mamdani running his entire 2025 campaign (videos and all) with an N95 on in public
Yea, I try not to get too hyped about any politician, but Mamdani has been testing that-- except the glaring lack of masking or anything. 🥲

a significant reason Mamdani can get away with this and other Dems can’t is less that he’s charmed Trump and more that he’s charmed you, dear reader, which is why you’re not yelling at him for being a collaborator or an appeaser right now

Twitter translation works from Hebrew and always turns itself off when there is a mix of languages (just one word in Latin alphabet mixed with Arabic, Russian, Hebrew, Japanese, Ukrainian, no matter, is enough to break the system).
Congrats on spreading racist notion that Hebrew = genocidal.
Twitter disabled Hebrew machine translation because they didn't want people to easily see how horribly genocidal israeli posts are.

Iowa City eliminating transit fares might be a useful case study for other college towns, but no, NYC should not be looking at the 5th biggest municipality in Iowa for how to run and finance transit in a real city.

It's too easy to grant the bullshit premise of the image, that the exact same number of bombs will fall on the same people regardless of which party is in power.
President Gore does not invade Iraq and modern Left has never answered for their part in helping elect W. As one example.

Even if it were the same target, and the target was morally pure and the bombing unambiguously evil, it would still be better if the country doing the evil were a more equal and equitable one.

Because a lesser evil is, and I can’t believe I have to keep saying this, *LESS* evil.

truly the best part of the rainbow b-52 thing is that the image doesn’t even show what’s being bombed, which is the actual determinant of whether the bombing is good or bad. notably, the odds the target is justified are also much better, if still not perfect, with the rainbow one.

These are the same people whose entire understanding of healthcare policy is “just make more Luigis”
Saw a pal the other day who definitely identifies himself as a lefty (such that he already fled to Canada once to escape our evil ways, but returned) and he was utterly aghast at the very suggestion he'd have to pay more in income tax vs just "the billionaires". So I told him he was a bad socialist.
The thing that most depresses me about this is that you have people nominally on the left who argue that this has not happened and adopt right-wing “taxed enough already” language to justify their taxes remaining low(er)

The deranged response to this makes me despair. There are so many educated, politically engaged people who are averse to thinking systematically. If you support LGBTQ rights, it is better, all else being equal, for the state to also support them.
I hate this sort of meme.

“The only difference between the parties is whether the power to destroy human civilization rests in the hands of leaders who think gays, women, and black people should have their rights acknowledged.”

Even if true, how is Rainbow B-52 not infinitely preferable?

The actual argument: it's better for people who care about civil rights to be in control of the US military than the other guys

The counter argument: I'm supposed to be grateful?!

There's a move being made here. It's not entirely clear if it's conscious.
“Even if true, how is Rainbow B-52 not infinitely preferable?”

Excuse me? Am I, a Pakistani, supposed to be grateful for all the drones and bombs that were used to massacre people in my homeland because it was done under the auspices of a black president and the dems?!

I’m actually speechless.

It's neither, actually
I feel like left/liberal discourse in both the UK and US (and presumably many other countries) would be healthier if more people realised “I will not vote for this party out of principle, but it would be better if they won” is an entirely coherent, and respectable, position

Nobody's saying online posters have more accountability than elected Democrats. It's that they have *some* accountability, i.e., greater than zero, which adds up over many accounts, and the problem is that accounts with large followings like Internet Hippo seem to believe it is zero.
