Nine years ago today I saw a BIG rock in Mexico that even had wispy steam emission from its summit, so you could say that was a good day.

Holy fucking shit this is a *real* image from a *real* (presumably peer-reviewed) paper in [Nature] Scientific Reports.

How many people had to sign off on this figure?

The editor, one hopes, the reviewer(s)? The copy editor?

What had to happen for THIS to get published?
Hey @nature.com, have you got an explanation for how the hell THIS happened? & especially why you accepted a paper with such a bizarre piece of genAI slop in it?!
& more to the point, why we should take you seriously at all going forward?

I should really refigure my lecture schedule so that we cover "Remote Sensing of Water" in early November.

A reminder: For the Holidays, your friends and families want books. Buy them books. If you aren't sure which book to get them, buy them more books. People want books!
My family has been calling me a luddite for years, & I’ve never felt better about that moniker than I do now, after a cities conference highlighting AI data centers & a new push for more surveillance downtown. We don’t have to participate. This year, shop in local stores, buy actual books. 📚🎄🕎
Christmas is coming, and the Black Friday sales signal we’re in peak gift-buying season.

When you’re picking out gifts for friends and family this year, there’s a whole slew of tech products that are better to avoid. I put together a guide to help you through it.

I rant about this on an almost daily basis.
Don’t get me started on how they ruined google scholar
Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

This is the second best parody of the Evangelion intro that I've ever seen.

(The first belongs, of course, to the King of the Hill-themed Propane Genesis Evangelion.)

I strongly endorse this. I read it earlier this year, and it was so fun and surreal.

I've started research on historic (preWW2) women who worked on volcanology/magmatic rocks. This includes anyone who was traveling to and writing about/observing/drawing/engaging with the landscape in myriad ways.

I'm building a list for further investigation. Will share soon! Any tip offs welcome!

Always a good feeling when a student leaves your office feeling pumped up because they understand something that was giving them trouble.

(In this case, principal components analysis and k-means clustering.)
