NeoLysenkoism.
Stuff like this has become so normalized, but it shouldn’t be.

The National Institutes of Health director leaving room for anti-vax narratives or participating in conferences of anti-vax groups is, frankly, outrageous.

I admit to being confused by some of the discourse re: protest on here. Community defense and mutual aid can in fact be forms of protest.

Definition of protest is: "a statement or action expressing disapproval of or objection to something."

Community defense is an objection to something, for ex.

What I like about this version is that it makes it clearer how she makes money: She sells plateloads of shit under different names. Fool enough people who don't know one another under enough different names & you sell enough shit to gross "six figures" (i.e., >$99K).
"If you need an hour to cook a meal and I only need 10 seconds to shit onto a dinner plate, who's going to win the race?"
The whole article is repulsive but this passage is at the core of it. She has no interest in writing books, she wants to win some kind of competition that nobody entered

Her framing's fascinating to me. She desperately needs us to believe she's The Winner, instead of another workaday grifter.

Dumb question: This scandal, considered seismic in Britain, is really about Mandelson leaking confidential, market-moving govt information to Epstein amid the 2008 financial crisis, which Epstein in turn passed to JP Morgan, including advice to Jamie Dimon.

Why is this not hitting Jamie Dimon?

It's just that the main things we now perceive as "the internet" are actually like 5 websites that obey engagement algorithms designed to make money by any means, and which force even interesting people to behave like brands.

BSKY ELDERS/BSKY HATERS: Bsky is fading.
THIS TWITTER STALWART: Bsky is going vertical, Twitter [sic] is empty.

Way too much social media discourse by ostensibly-serious people seems to reduce to some flavor of 'Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded.'

"'It's easier to fool a man than to convince him that he's been fooled.' ... But eventually you figure it out, right?" & then if you're a lot of people who did something now believed to be objectively horrible, you change your story about what you did.

The Target situation is like a microcosmic example of the US tariff initiative. People thought they needed Target, until the boycott. Now they’ve found ways around it and don’t wanna go back. Other countries are now realizing they don’t need the big superpower USA and are adjusting accordingly.

I used to argue that the dotcom's key underlying belief could be summarized as "cocaine is nutritious."

In the crypto boom I amended that to "crystal meth is nutritious."

Where do we go with genAI? "Meth is God"?
"Electricians are getting harder to find, and some construction projects are on hold. Smartphones are expected to get pricier for potentially years to come. And promising innovations are being starved of investment funding." Just some of the effects of the boom.
The AI boom is so huge it’s causing shortages everywhere else
The hundreds of billions of dollars being spent by tech companies on AI projects are diverting resources from other parts of the economy.

The only way I can make sense of laying off all the photographers & photo editors is to make a declarative statement that you should never again expect photos to represent reality.
The Washington Post just laid off its entire award-winning photo team. They were our eyes in places we'll never see. It's a horrifying loss at a time when lying governments, propaganda and AI slop are on the rise.
