The invasion of Venezuela is one thing, but Trump’s proposed plan to invade Cuba could seriously damage the credibility of the FIFA Peace Prize.

In light of illegal actions by the U.S. gov't in Venezuela, we highlight a few teaching resources, starting with the classic "people's history" of Latin America by Eduardo Galeano, "Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent." 🧵

More behavior that's not very becoming of a FIFA Peace Prize recipient
As we all said, international law, such as it was, no longer exists. The United States, following Israel’s precedent, considers itself to have the explicit authority to blatantly violate sovereignty anywhere in the world and abduct even leaders of other states.

There are no guardrails whatsoever.

Could we counter this era of cruelty in the form of a deeply caring politics?
It is tempting to think so watching Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s inauguration today.
This era of cruelty must be countered by care

Proud of this one. I don’t horn-toot as a rule but it’s my birthday so screw it. This was my most read column of the year and the third most read story of year at @thenation.com . I was one of two writers to have more than one in the yearly top ten. Ok. Stopping now. Making myself sick. Got issues.

America's richest 10% now hold 60% of the nation's wealth.

The bottom half of America? It holds just 6%.

Wealth inequality is eating this country alive.

Anti-trans demagogue and fifth place swimmer Riley Gaines earned $470,000+ last year from a conservative non-profit.

Notably, $420k was incentive-based.

A neat little window into the way the transphobic grift is being compensated.

I wonder what the per-post rate is?

Just wild that a Bari Weiss, a supposed journalist, watched this segment and thought it should be kept from the public. Talk about the Streisand Effect. Everyone's scrounging the Internet to watch a bootlegged 60 Minutes segment that was censored by CBS. Seems like a historical pivot in slow motion.

a big part of the issue surrounding the use of chatgpt/LLMs in academic research comes down to process vs. product. a lot of us know that the process of doing research matters because that's where intellectual work is done; but some "academics" and lots of techies only care about a fast product
