NOlympics LA started as a DSA-LA working group. This year, they decided to make their bed with Unite Here’s reformist platform.

Our position is that the Olympics cannot be reformed. Efforts to do so elsewhere have consistently failed. There is no “good” way to host the Olympics.

I know it's not surprising anymore, but it's still shocking to see US police beating people in the streets for...celebrating a world series win.

In case anyone thought these mega-event organizers would stand up to Trump, please disabuse yourself of the thought. They’ll do whatever it takes to placate the madman.

Yet more money draining from the city into the police.
LAPD found another way to defund the city, this time by trying to overhire officers beyond their hiring budget. The decision could cost the city $3.56 million in $ it doesn't have, and the councilmembers on the Budget and Finance Committee weren't too happy about it

LAPD projects to further defund the city by overhiring officers, drawing ire from city council.
No funding has been identified to cover the $3.56 million overspending.

“The only thing it accomplishes is giving pretextual excuses for LAPD’s bloodlust during public assemblies.” THAT PART!
Be sure to also note @adamrose.bsky.social's assessment of why declaring an unlawful assembly to shut down a bar DURING THE FINAL GAME OF THE WORLD SERIES sets a chilling precedent: “Using unlawful assembly this way is like pre-crime or thought-crime enforcement"

We keep getting chances to prove that we know what we're doing. And we keep failing.

And in seven months this city is going to be filled with tens of thousands of soccer fans. Good luck!
In 217 days people from all over the globe are going to congregate in LA to watch extremely intense sporting matches in public. What's the strategy to welcome these fans if we're tear-gassing anyone who dares to drink a Modelo on the sidewalk?

"There's a lot of things that can go wrong."

— LA City Council President @mhdcd8.bsky.social and one of the geniuses who rubberstamped this horrendous deal
The Olympics are a multi-billion dollar business. Here's what that means for LA taxpayers
The city's financial exposure is essentially unlimited in the event of budget overruns.

I wrote about LA's remarkable opportunity to once again use the World Series as trial run for upcoming megaevents. Unfortunately our leaders are incapable of envisioning a city that cheers together: there was very little planning for public celebration and a whole lot of leeway for police aggression

Torched readers know I have been begging for a vision statement from the city for the past 1.5 years. But with less than three years to go, I was hoping for some goals beyond those outlined in the games agreement. This vision really struggles to articulate any tangible benefits for the city

Unfortunately, the mayor's vision — which feels about 1,000 days too late — is so light on substance that it's hard to see how LA's megaevent future materializes

what a slap in the face to anyone living in LA

you can’t afford to attend the games in your own city, but hey we set up some TVs so you watch them
Take, for example, this plan for creating community celebration zones for Angelenos who don't have tickets to events. This is truly the promise of "Games for All."

One celebration zone per council district?! That's 15 sites for a 500-square-mile city! Hardly "every corner of the city"

Mega-events are just parties for the rich! They’re not meant for the people who live in the city that hosts them. THOSE people are meant to be out of sight.

We signed this letter to CD1. 41.18 can and will be used to criminalize ANYONE existing in public that the State doesn’t want existing in public. And sweeps are only going to get worse and more frequent unless our so-called “progressive” officials step up and fulfill their campaign promises.
Residents of the encampment, the Mountain View community, who were swept by Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez have signed a letter to the office demanding she end sweeps and "push back against 41.18," the anti-camping law that many were cited with.
