With global bids dwindling, the Olympic machine is now circling back to former host cities faster than ever.
THE FOREVER GAMES Historically, the Olympics would wait a generation or two — enough time for the cultural memory of harm to fade — before attempting to return to a prospective host city. But with global bids dwindling, the Olympic machine is now circling back faster than ever. After Tokyo 2020, Japan immediately floated a 2030 bid for Sapporo. Over the past decade, as Olympic popularity among potential host cities has nosedived, many pundits and boosters have suggested that the problem with the Olympics is the existing rotating city model. They’ve gone on to suggest that Los Angeles could be one of — or the sole — permanent home for the Games. If LA28 is successful in whitewashing the harm that comes with them (their board members and boosters control a huge chunk of international and local media, after all), we will be setting ourselves up for a never-ending barrage of mega-events, and that’s a reality this extremely fragile city cannot bear. For the LA Sports and Entertainment Council, which Wasserman funds, the Forever Games is literally the plan. The LASEC “is dedicated to hosting the world’s leading sports and entertainment events in Los Angeles that drive lasting social and economic impact in our communities.” Image: casey wasserman's ugly ass face looking confused in front of LA28's logo When Casey takes off his LASEC hat and puts on his LA28 hat, the social and economic impact of hosting an event that invites federal immigration authorities and supercharges gentrification and displacement suddenly becomes unrelated to hosting mega-events. Homelessness is “not LA28s problem to solve… [It’s] everybody’s problem to solve”. If the LASEC gets their way, LA will be hosting mega-events every year, inviting ICE to terrorize Angelenos permanently.

The IOC does whatever it wants, remaining unaccountable in the lead up to and delivery of the Games. Once the Games are over, there is nothing to compel them, or local officials, to follow through on anything they promised. FAILED REFORM OF ATHLETE ABUSE One clear example of this is SafeSport, a compromised oversight body created to supposedly curb rampant sexual abuse of Olympic athletes. By any objective measure SafeSport has consistently failed in its stated mission, and the Olympics remain unaccountable and opaque as ever.

The story remains the same on every continent. Corruption, pollution, false promises, and ballooning budgets.
RIO 2016 Famously polluted Gaunabara Baywould has not been detoxified after officials promised it would be by 2016. A year after the Games, Olympic organizers promised, as they always do, to stay on budget. In 2017, Business Insider reported that “The Rio Olympics were a financial disaster and it keeps getting worse”. Tokyo “2020” Tokyo parks saw increased policing and closed shop frontages lined up one after another, victims of rising property prices and rents. The Games went severely over budget to the tune of tens of billions of dollars, pandemic notwithstanding. They also featured a wide-sweeping bribery scandal. Tokyo “2020” Olympic boosters capitalized on the immediate aftermath of Tokyo 2020 to push for an Olympic bid in Sapporo for 2030. That bid was ultimately defeated by the Olympic resistance movement, but only insofar as it’s being pushed back for a later date, 2034 or perhaps 2038 if necessary. The IOC is setting its sights on Japan, with the rationale that if you can get away with it once, why not again and again? LA faces the same dilemma. LA 2028 LA’s own bid was sold as a “No Build” Olympics — an alleged Olympic reform, and the city is now in the midst of negotiating how many regulations can be elided for 2028 Olympic building projects. The LA28 bid was promised to be “car-free” — another alleged reform — which has now been downgraded to “transit first” and will feature an official provider of chartered helicopters.

Several former host leaders, reeling from the disastrous effects of the Olympics visiting their communities, have spoken in favor of this idea. In Los Angeles, the Forever Games is being championed by Olympic chair Casey Wasserman and his LA Sports and Entertainment Council. NOlympics LA started as a DSA-LA working group. This year, they decided to make their bed with Unite Here’s reformist platform.

Our position is that the Olympics cannot be reformed. Efforts to do so elsewhere have consistently failed. There is no “good” way to host the Olympics.

The Flower Drive Tenants Association has been fighting Olympic displacement for years.
Flower Drive Tenants Association There used to be two blocks of residents across from the LA Memorial Coliseum on Flower Drive. The 3900 block was bought by Ventus Group in 2019 with plans to build “Exposition Point” (formerly “The Fig”), a large complex containing 252 hotel rooms, 252 student housing units, 78 mixed-income apartments, retail, and office space. It anchors Ventus Group’s assemblage of a total of 7.8 acres of land into mixed-use development projects. Although the eight fourplexes of the 3900 block provided rent-stabilized homes for 32 families and the buildings were registered as a historic district, in 2019 LA’s City Council approved a plan that would allow Ventus Group to demolish them all. Some residents took $50,000 cash for keys offers that didn’t help them find permanent housing, as rents are so high in Los Angeles that the money only helped them get so far. After Ventus Group purchased the 3800 block, the firm targeted the block with an intense cash-for-keys program as well. They didn’t want to see what happened to their neighbors happen to them, and they fought back. On March 2021, they joined the Los Angeles Tenants Union and formed the Flower Drive Tenants Association. They organized weekly bilingual meetings for neighbors and community members to share information, articulate demands, and strengthen their resolve to fight. From these gatherings, members decided early on to reject Ventus Group’s cash-for-keys offers. Since its formation, Flower Drive Tenants Association members have used their meetings to support each other on subsequent issues, such as establishing terms for film and food truck companies working next to their homes, and providing guidance on how to address management’s suite of harassment tactics. FDTA and NOlympics LA will continue to work together to oppose Olympic development as we march closer to the 2028 games.

Hosting a mega event every few years means living under a permanent NSSE, inviting the Secret Service to make their Olympic Office (open now) permanent.

Angelenos don't want a permanent version of the last week, but local leaders are deadset on collaborating with Trump fascism.

Trump will make every sporting event a National Special Security Event, enabling ICE, CBP, the Secret Service & the entire DHS to terrorize the residents and visitors of the host cities.

Supposed "Sanctuary cities" will require new policies to actually protect residents.

Nolympics June ICE raids statement The Olympics Fuel Karen Bass’ Cowardly Collaboration with Trump's Mass Kidnappings The last few days, and indeed months, have seen an onslaught of State violence committed against vulnerable Angelenos that is shocking and upsetting, even if it's not surprising. Karen Bass has stood by while Trump sends ICE and now the national guard to mass deport our community. As LAPD worked side by side with ICE, providing cover and crowd control as security guards for the invading troops, it appeared that Mayor Bass sat back and let it all happen. But her earlier actions also enabled it: in January 2024 she invited ICE, DHS, and the Secret service to set up shop in LA for the Olympics–they've been working to gain a bigger foothold here for a year and a half. Bass requested the National Special Security Event designation that allows federal security agencies to operate in LA beginning an unprecedented 4 years early–the farthest in advance the designation has ever been granted. The Olympics are greasing the wheels for the Feds to tear our families apart. Bass is also operating under Trump's thumb. Because Olympic planning is in such a dismal state, the city is reliant on the federal government for $3 billion for Olympics-related transportation (including an absurd $2 billion to rent buses) and an estimated $2 billion more for “security.” The Mayor isn't in a position to question Trump because he's got billions of federal dollars in leverage over her. If you're wondering why Karen Bass has done nothing but release statements about the kidnappings of community members by masked men, that's one reason why. The Olympics not only invite the Feds to violently harass and deport Angelenos. They're being used to keep Mayor Bass from doing her job: protecting Angelenos. The Olympics make LA weaker. We don't need them. #CancelTheOlympics

It initiates an ordinance to regulate additional private property construction activity that may impair the Games operations and visitor experience. It also authorizes the Bureau of Street Services to implement a special events moratorium during the same period. The report further directs all City permitting and construction agencies to implement restrictions consistent with the moratorium. DISCUSSION To effectuate the 2028 Games Construction Moratorium within the public right of way, BOE plans to use the framework of the annual Holiday Moratorium as a base to build upon. The Holiday Moratorium is an annual restriction on permits for construction activities on certain public streets during the holiday season, in an attempt to minimize impacts on shoppers and retail businesses. Early notices are issued to all stakeholders, including utility companies, other users of the public right of way, and operators of public facilities, that certain streets should not be disrupted by construction activities during specific dates. Moratorium streets are typically identified due to their proximity to retail businesses or their high traffic volumes during the holiday.
