I used to be music writer/critic for a website. It is harder than it looks. Writing is harder than it looks. People who write (and do it well) should be paid. @stereogum.com does it well. Few music columns are as good as the Number Ones/Alt Number Ones by @tombreihan.bsky.social. Support them!

For years, advertising has been how Stereogum made money to pay its writers. While we made progress moving away from that model, Google AI search has decimated the business almost overnight. Today we relaunch with a greater focus on subscription. We’d love your support: stereogum.com/2478838/ster...

Excited to see our paper out in @natgeosci.nature.com this week! 'Lessons from 40 years of communicating volcanic risk during crisis'.

In it we reflect on our progress for volcanic crisis communications since the devastating 1985 Nevado del Ruiz eruption, and identify where challenges remain.

This is quite a view as well, with twin lava fountains at Kīlauea right now: www.youtube.com/watch?v=tk0t... www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bqmp...

Took a little longer between eruption (government shutdown and all), but Kīlauea is blasting away again. www.youtube.com/watch?v=tk0t...

Remember folks, none of this is about policy. None of this is about fiscal conservative or the national debt. All of this is to punish those whom they hold a grudge and to prop up their adored leader. It isn't supposed to "make sense" with any ideology.

Ok, for the curious, here is what happened. Our youngest cat (Tumalo, ~11 months) has been fascinated with licking the RO water dispenser on our kitchen island. This is kind of gross, so we have been trying ways to get him to stop. We recently resorted to putting an upside-down ziplock on the (1/x)

If you want something to say to people who badmouth socialism, try these:
1. It isn't communism. It works in a democracy.
2. It's the radical idea that individual wealth isn't the primary goal of society.
3. It doesn't take your money. It makes sure everyone has what they need as a baseline.

Have a lot of trouble taking anyone seriously who thinks socialism is a dirty word but fascism, authoritarianism, racism are all just fine.

I wasn't a PPFP postdoc, but I was a UC postdoc and it was an amazing experience. This is definitely a "shot-yourself-in-the-foot" move.
A devastating set of decisions on the part of UC leadership to withdraw support from our nationally recognized postdoc program that prioritizes research excellence combined with addressing our university public service mission. www.insidehighered.com/news/faculty...
UC to Stop Funding Systemwide Postdoc Program
Established in 1984 to encourage women and minority Ph.D.s to pursue academia, the program has attracted right-wing criticism for prioritizing diverse candidates.

Hey musician instrument folks! My wife got this at an estate auction -- we thought it was a fancy zither but when we got it home, it had strings *on both sides*. The only "brand" is "Waynie". Any clue what instrument this might be?

I was that lone kid living in the woods of northern Worcester County Massachusetts who loved Adam Ant.
Adam Ant is 71 today. Hard to emphasise how seismic this was in playgrounds across the country in 1980. For a period he was as big as any act has been. Was he the perfect pop star? I think so. It couldn't last but if you were there you'll never forget it.
