I'm pretty sure it's a rule that if you have lots of coins left before going home you have to head to the closest vending machine to get rid of them

In other news, I really don't want to head back to the hellscape country I unfortunately call home. Japan, please adopt me

I come to you live from the natural history museum in Tokyo

Dear Japan, I apologize for the idiot Americans who visit, like the mob of half a dozen standing in the middle of the station, having a conversation and blocking traffic at rush hour, and the woman with the giant handbag and absolutely no spacial awareness, bumping into everyone, including me.

Every day I keep seeing the most incredible things in Japan. Yesterday @shimakiron.bsky.social took me to the Lafcadio Hearn museum and residence. I've read nearly all his books so it was a fascinating experience.

And then last night we walked along Mizuki Shigeru Road, the creator of Gege no Kitaro, in the dark and found the most incredibly creative experience with yokai shadows in the snow that turned on when you walked by, illuminated yokai statues, flickering and fading lights and a yokai shrine.

Sorry, there's no #InvertArtChallenge this month because I'm still traveling.

I visited Ise Shrine with @shimakiron.bsky.social for New Year's Day and realized I ended up directly across the river from the first place @tutaikobushisawa.bsky.social took me when I first arrived in Japan. I've gone in a big circle over the last month.

#InverteFest is nearly over here in Japan, so here's a reminder to all anthology participants to submit your art and writing! Thank you to everyone who already has. If you need a little more time, that's not a problem, just email me and let me know you're still working on it.

I am always on the look out for papers to write about for the Parasite of the Day blog, but because I can only write 12 posts each year, there are always interesting papers on my short list, that I didn't end up writing about on the blog. 🧪

The thread 🧵 below are the PotD honourable mentions.

Yesterday @shimakiron.bsky.social and @kibarashi-25.bsky.social took me on a pilgrimage to the setting of one of my favorite films, Your Name. There were many shrines, good food and I learned a lot.

Happy #InverteFest!

I admire creatures with good camouflage because I would also like to disappear into the background from time to time 😂
