Singing about Puerto Rican independence while Pedro Pascal dances in a casita and the field is covered in native plants and also there’s a wedding is exactly the vibe I needed tonight

Days like this I love having the weather station. 26+ mph winds sometime this morning, even in our semi-sheltered yard!

US NSF/GEO folks: if you/your students had GRFP applications that were returned without review, please send a note to grfpprodirector@nsf.gov - they are logging and handling inquiries.

This is a terrible hit in a series of terrible hits to journalism. And as others have noted, for those of us in/around DC this is our local. It’s amazing to see how many (really phenomenal) local news outlets are growing in its absence, but this sucks nonetheless.

“The legal work behind detentions has largely been an overlooked battlefield that will likely rage on years after ICE departs the streets, leaving in its wake hundreds if not thousands of long-and-winding court cases.”

Great profile of one of the lawyers on the ground in MN.

DC just sent out two city wide alerts saying “Monday, January 20” (today is the 19th) so be advised this is happening tonight and could be visible around 8pm here in DC!
MUST READ thread before Monday night's forecasted G4 / SEVERE geomagnetic storm. Auroras could be seen as far south as the U.S.-Mexico border at times. Widespread mid-latitude displays are possible. Here's what you need to know to have a successful aurora chase tonight! 🧵

Eos has released a fantastic report today looking back at the last year of changes to science policy and the scientific workforce.

The full report is split into 5 sections. Sit down with it, share it with colleagues and policymakers, and keep an eye out for what's likely next in 2026.

If you’re frustrated with national news coverage and like podcasts, let me rec the City Cast extended universe.

In addition to DC I tune into Chicago, Portland, Twin Cities—TC had great segments today on local restaurants handling ICE and the mass resignation at the MN US atty office.

There is a lot to be unhappy about right now, and I sure am, but my current sadness is because they changed the title from Three Bags Full to The Sheep Detectives for the movie.

So sad to miss #AGU25 … especially right now. But very glad colleagues like Laura (and 6ish others from across NSF/GEO + BIO!) are there!
I’m here at #AGU25! Looking forward to connecting with the research community and talking science. Looking for the NSF booth? Out of necessity we’ve gone mobile! See you out there…
