The Pacific Ocean teems with phytoplankton along the West Coast of the United States, as captured by the MODIS instrument on NASA’s Aqua satellite. Satellites can track phytoplankton blooms, which occur when these plant-like organisms receive optimal amounts of sunlight and nutrients. The bright quasar 3C 273 has a large jet that is visible in optical light, extending some 200,000 light years from the quasar itself. At 3C 273's great distance of over 2 billion light years the jet appears only 23 arc-seconds long in the sky, extending towards the SW. To the left is a comparison with an image form the Hubble Space Telescope, showing the jet in high resolution and revealing its detailed structure. Click here to see the spectrum of 3C 273 captured with a simple diffraction grating, and its red-shift and distance calculated using the Hydrogen emission lines. An image like this might seem bland and uninteresting, but it’s a good illustration of the power of HiRISE to take high resolution images like no other camera currently operating beyond the Earth. This is located in the center of an unnamed impact crater to the northwest of the massive Hellas impact basin. Even if a lander or human never poses a footstep there, an image like this can help characterize the possible hazards for future exploration. This view of southern California was taken by the Apollo 7 crew during their 18th revolution of the Earth, on Oct. 12, 1968. Photographed from an altitude of 124 nautical miles, the coast of California can be seen from Point Mugu southward to Oceanside. Santa Catalina can be seen below the off shore clouds. Details of the Los Angeles area are obscured by pollution which extends from Banning westward for 100 miles to beyond Malibu. In the upper portion of the photograph can be seen (left to right) the San Joaquin Valley beyond Bakersfield, the Techachapi Mountains, the Sierra Nevada, Owens Valley, Death Valley and the Mojave Desert. Apollo 7, which launched on Oct. 11, 1968, and was nicknamed "The Walt, Wally and Donn Show," was the first crewed Apollo mission to launch. The mission demonstrated the capabilities of the Command and Service Module, mission support facilities' performance during a crewed mission and Apollo rendezvous capability, as well as the first live TV broadcasts from space. I had some massive charge bleeds on top of the usual cosmic rays to contend with on this. I am pleased at how much better it looks with the artifacts removed. This is a close-up of the center of NGC 604. The previously submitted image was a wide view of this same object. They almost don't look like part of the same thing! Hubble is amazing but I feel sad knowing we can't see any new images from Hubble's defunct HRC. When they named it High Resolution Channel, they meant it. The images it captured were really astonishingly high resolution. Well, anyway, I can't say my processing of this is profoundly different from preexisting processing, but it's still part of my learning process. I was messing around with more noise reducing techniques in Photoshop for this. It's really hard to get a computer to tell the difference between the fainter stars and the random noise permeating the image. You could sit there and slowly mask each one off and possibly go insane during the process. Red: HST_10419_11_ACS_HRC_F850LP_sci + HST_10419_11_ACS_HRC_F658N_sci Green: HST_10419_11_ACS_HRC_F550M_sci + HST_10419_11_ACS_HRC_F435W_sci Blue: HST_10419_11_ACS_HRC_F330W_sci + HST_10419_11_ACS_HRC_F250W_sci + HST_10419_11_ACS_HRC_F220W_sci North is NOT up. It is 48.5° clockwise from up.
