Community college geology professor in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA
Not the most inspiring 'field trip photo' - but the Geology Club & I went to the Charlottesville Downtown Mall this snowy afternoon, to check out geology in the building stones. This is soapstone from the Alberene Quarry on the Albemarle/Nelson county line, used to face the Water St. parking deck. ⚒️

1. It was not an accident.
2. It was not a staffer.
3. While the president may have dementia his racism is not due to dementia.
4. He isn’t sorry. He means every racist thought he shares.
5. His base agrees with him.
6. He will do it again.
7. No one in power will hold him accountable.

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

It took me a minute to understand why this graph was constructed this way... I guess it's meant to be read from left to right as a story:
"UP, up, up, down, up, down, total"

Solar didn’t just shine in 2025 —
it shutdown all of the naysayers.

Costs collapsed. Deployment exploded.
Markets shifted gears.

That’s not a trend —
that’s transformation.

Years of progress. Years of scale.
No shortcuts. No flash.

While others exposed their shortcomings, solar forged ahead.

Even the headline here is a capitulation. Why use the softer framing when he literally said, verbatim, "we should take over the voting"?

I've seen fossils in some remarkable places, but this takes the prize: the benthic foram Nummulites in the base of the Great Pyramid of Giza. These massive blocks were quarried from the Eocene Mokkatam Formation when a relictual population of woolly mammoths still lived on Wrangel Island.

Because of the big snowstorm & our region's lack of comprehensive plowing prowess (& the deep cold that has followed), the K12 schools have been closed all week & I've been doing Remote Instruction.
I miss being on campus; seeing the students in person. I hope we are back face to face next week.
