Study after study shows that it's remarkably cheap and easy to solve the problems of homelessness and poverty with low-barrier supportive housing and universal basic income, but our own fear that someone, somewhere will get something they didn't "earn" keeps us looking for other (punitive) options.
“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”

It costs a lot less to house people.
Finland ends homelessness and provides shelter for all in need - scoop.me
In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Why? The country applies the "Housing First" concept agains homelessness.

NY Times laundering conservatism again. They aren’t trying to dissuade Democracts from supporting queer people as a means to the end of “attract[ing] more voters”; purging the Democratic Party of its halfhearted commitment to queer rights is their end, in and of itself.

It’s an absolute shame that DC fired Gretchen Felker- Martin for exercising free speech and then @bsky.app suspended her account. Every writer here should be decrying this because we have to stand up for each other! This is ridiculous.

The surest sign that trans women are women is the fact that literally everyone else is trusted to be a better authority on our own lives than we are.
One of the most disheartening things about trans advocacy is how little the people who claim to be on our side actually listen to us.

"trans-identifying", "biological sex", and a variety of other GC dogwhistles have become common parlance because people listen to our enemies, but not us.
Whole ass nation states are attempting to confine trans people to the home—preventing us from using the toilet, playing sports or accessing medical care without exposure to violence—on the basis that “changing your sex is impossible” so if you’re saying that to trans people too, meet your allies.

On Doctor Who they should have a guy named Dale, and all season long his name is Dale, and everyone calls him Dale, and then in the second-to-last episode the Doctor is like “wait I’ve just decoded rhe ancient runes, there’s a hidden K at the end of his name and his name is actually DALEK!

“Elite” undergraduate education exists to consolidate elites. Always has.

There are a hundred places in the UK where a straight-A student can get an outstanding degree, & have their pick of graduate opportunities. But only a handful of them put you on a lifelong pedestal *just for getting in*.
I remember being at a Williams College recruiting event where deans were telling students “you’ll be part of a network of alums that will take care of you for life.” No mention of quality of education or campus life. Just connections.

Everywhere in the western world trans people are making up for the gap in standard healthcare by having to basically buy drugs off the internet without prescription or supervision becasue there is not realistic alternative for continuity of care if you travel from one place to another.
Transgender people who have legally changed their gender and previously accessed healthcare in their home countries are required to join the years-long waiting list and be assessed again.

In our final article in our series, @conorocarroll.bsky.social speaks to people who moved to Ireland:
Transgender people moving to Ireland put on long waitlist for vital healthcare until assessed
The Journal Investigates spoke to transgender people who moved to Ireland and couldn’t continue the care they received abroad

OMG, THIS. I've never heard it put that way before, but yes, my entire childhood, my entire life was "conversion therapy".
We know conversion therapy doesn’t work because the society we live in is conversion therapy. It is deeply rotted through with oppositional sexism and attendance is considered mandatory, no small infraction unnoticed. Not everyone can find the exit door, a deep injustice that often goes unnoticed.

some dumb motherfuckers , even libs , act like the relative lack of conservative professors is a problem . but american conservatism is an anti intellectual movement! might as well ask why there’s a lack of vegan chefs in brazilian steakhouses
The conservative movement has turned against reality on every scientific issue of our time, from gun violence to climate change to epidemiology.

If campuses are ideologically homogenous, it's not because academia has ostracized conservatives. It's because conservatives have ostracized academia.

I’m extremely sympathetic to “no deportations regardless of who people are,” but it’s definitely a choice to intentionally elide that this is a.) an old post about b.) the deportation of a former Nazi camp guard. Not including that context up front is, frankly, shady
Eat my entire ass @aoc.bsky.social. You shut the fuck up about abolishing ICE the moment Biden got elected, you haven't said shit about it for half a fucking decade. No is illegal means no one is illegal, abolishing ICE means abolishing deportations

Moreover, ICE must be destroyed

"It's just a myth" what do you think myths are for? what do you think they do? from whose perspective do we get them? how do they get reproduced and retold? who does that? Myth making is cultural, it is a site for social reproduction. It's not hard to see that this is suppression of transfemininity.
I can with confidence say that (a significant number of) Dionysus's maenads were trans women and so was Hermaphroditus. The erasure and third-sexing of transfemininity is key to reproducing patriarchy across time and culture.

The film Civil War and the marketing campaign for Civil War are fascinating cultural objects in diametrically opposed ways.
If Alex garland had just kept his trap shut in interviews, people would’ve realized civil war was one of the best movies of the year (and one of the few legitimately anti-war war movies, grading on the Murch scale)
One thing I really hate about all this is that it validates the Alex Garland movie CIVIL WAR

it also...took extra time because states and feds basically had to completely remap broadband access because our broadband maps, for decades, have been shit. You don't want to throw $42.5 billion in taxpayer dollars at a problem you haven't measured accurately. That would be...bad.
