What's lost when we lose staff, departments, programmes and faculties in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and what's that got to do with organ donation?

Amid the looming losses faced by Cardiff, Edinburgh, Lancaster, Leicester and Nottingham (among many others), here's a worked example. 1/8

This is so sadistic. These people are proud of the terror they're inflicting. They're enjoying it.

ICE/CBP have targeted Little Village for 10+ yrs. In just the last 3 wks, they've repeatedly (3x) used chemical weapons, aimed guns, & threatened residents, most recently this past weekend.

He is a computer safety researcher.

And he has written one of the most compelling, comprehensive accounts of the ongoing hell in Chicago that you could possibly imagine.

In under 1600 words.

The double standards here are astonishing, given selective and/or often fabricated torrent of media distributed by Trump's supporters in justifying Jan 6. That British politicians are publicly pressurising the BBC over this is even more shocking.

I honestly don’t get the value of this company. They hoover up energy and water. Their product constantly gets things wrong and, in extreme cases, coaches people into suicide.

And it’s all built on what seems to be malicious and vast intellectual property theft.

What does OpenAI offer the world?

Was talking to a junior colleague about this exact problem yesterday. I wonder if REF panels (made up of experienced and secure academics) have considered this?
The current REF system really encourages temporary staff to burn down their own careers - either you complete research because you need it for your CV, but an institution can claim any resulting outputs before making you redundant so you've nothing to take elsewhere, or...

Kate Clanchy’s “i’ve been cancelled” tour has been going on for FOUR YEARS and in that period publishing of books by Black authors has declined. So who’s really been cancelled?
A white journalist at a white BBC has made what looks like a hit piece about a white writer charged with racism by a number of writers of colour. The twist? The BBC attacks the writers of colour.

Solidarity with all Black and Brown people fighting to be treated with dignity. Screw the racist BBC.

This was self evident from the beginning; and why I find universities' uncritical relationships with OpenAI and Microsoft CoPilot etc so very problematic--we know what the long term goals of these projects/companies are, and their imbrications within technofascism.
How can you reconcile this?
The long-running ideological war on libraries, education, and government workers is not separate from AI boosterism. It is the same ideological war on human knowledge and expertise. In some cases AI is being used to directly supercharge this effort:

Powerful questioning from my colleague @elliechowns.bsky.social, pinning the government on exactly what it needs to do - NOW - to bring about an end to the atrocities being committed in Sudan.
In the midst of horrific mass killings and violence, British-made military equipment has been found in Sudan.

It's clear our arms export licensing system is not fit for purpose; we need a full review, alongside an embargo on all arms exports to the UAE now.

Tests don't improve literacy. And being 'ready to take on unions' really translates as 'I'm trying to pander to some parts of the electorate by needlessly fighting with those who actually work in the sector'.
If you want kids to read:

-Reopen the closed libraries
-Give them free books
-Sponsor author visits in schools with high % pupil premium or FSM students
-Work on adult literacy

Then Y8s will have a chance of passing this test
