Nine NFL players under 48 have died this year. NINE. And twenty under the age of 65. I'm looking into it for a longer article. But I'm taking to bluesky to say that I cannot believe - or maybe its just too easy to believe - that in our NFL obsessed sports media culture, this is not a bigger story.

Where was this backbone from Miliband when he was leader?
Of all the staggering detail in that New Statesman piece, this but stood out for me. People were reluctant to tell Starmer Miliband had refused to move? Not sure whether it’s Starmer or his aides that look worse here.

Hey, @ucunorthumbria.bsky.social! First they came for your time (cutting prep and research hours). Then they came for your space (hotdesking in shared offices). Now they're coming for your pay (15%+ cut for indefinite period) or pension (bear the cost of moving to another scheme). Come to the EBM!

I honestly don’t get the value of this company. They hoover up energy and water. Their product constantly gets things wrong and, in extreme cases, coaches people into suicide.

And it’s all built on what seems to be malicious and vast intellectual property theft.

The current REF system really encourages temporary staff to burn down their own careers - either you complete research because you need it for your CV, but an institution can claim any resulting outputs before making you redundant so you've nothing to take elsewhere, or...

A white journalist at a white BBC has made what looks like a hit piece about a white writer charged with racism by a number of writers of colour. The twist? The BBC attacks the writers of colour.

This was self evident from the beginning; and why I find universities' uncritical relationships with OpenAI and Microsoft CoPilot etc so very problematic--we know what the long term goals of these projects/companies are, and their imbrications within technofascism.
How can you reconcile this?
The long-running ideological war on libraries, education, and government workers is not separate from AI boosterism. It is the same ideological war on human knowledge and expertise. In some cases AI is being used to directly supercharge this effort:
