The health impacts of #climate change are coming and we are not ready, say panelists at #ACHJSummit. "Many physicians do not have training in dealing with extreme heat," says Grace Wickerson of @scientistsorg.bsky.social. "Do we have a health system that's ready for this? No we do not."

We can’t say you didn’t know. “Never again” is happening again.

What's being described in this thread 🧵 is a concentration camp right on American soil, with all the horror and injustice that name carries.
Her husband told her that detainees at Broadview had to get up at 5am to get in line for one bathroom. He often peed himself. One time he had to wait until 2pm to use the bathroom. You could only use the bathroom once a day. He said the agents would beat you if you used the bathroom on yourself.

I don’t want the lesson Dems take from this election to be wait for Republicans to destroy the government and we’ll get them in the next election.

The message remains:
PEOPLE WANT YOU TO FUCKING FIGHT.

Well said. And supports why I’ve always objected to how nonprofit and public service sectors let mindless business jargon permeate our work. People mindlessly nod along to ideas when framed with terms like “value add” and “the learnings.” Seeing jargon as credibility is dangerous and exclusionary.
If you’d like to read my essay about George Orwell, writing by machines, and our current nihilism about meaning, I offer you the entire zine in this thread.

I will finish the thread with instructions on how to print your own copies of the zine.

See if you can spot it! /s

Another value of humor as strategic resistance: jokes are memorable and repeatable—qualities our messaging often lacks.

Whereas the far-right messaging machine spews memorable talking points, buys/threatens media to amplify them, and gets Democrats to repeat them.

We need comedy to fight back.
Is comedy an effective way to push back at Trump’s abuses of power, or does it trivialize them? I ask this question in my free Stop the Presses newsletter and add a historical perspective about the “whisper jokes” told in other countries’ dictatorships.
Can comedy help conquer fascism?
Loudly mocking Trump now may help us avoid “whisper jokes” later

"Harvard can't use race as a factor in admissions, but ICE can use race as a factor in detentions" is a retrenchment essentially to a pre-Civil War understanding of the Constitution. It's vanishingly few steps removed from "Latinos have no rights which the white man is bound to respect."
