i do think now is perhaps the worst time in all of human history for trans people to be settling our beefs with each other loudly and in the public square.

i think that’s a pretty bad decision to be making in 2025.

Interesting article about efforts to bring back the American chestnut. Looks like the hybrid tree option (95% genetically American chestnut, but hybridized with other chestnut species that are resistant) seems to be the most effective. I hope one day these lost forests can be restored! 🌱 🌎

The NYT’s big profile on Skrmetti is centered around a genuine factual error, accusing the movement for trans rights and ACLU specifically of being behind the lawsuit, when it was the Biden administration.

It’s literally in the name of the case, US v Skrmetti.
It was the Biden administration's DOJ who decided to pursue this to the Supreme Court, not a trans rights group.
This framing is beneath contempt. The Christian right and MAGA launched an unprecedented assault on the civil rights of a tiny minority and successfully weaponized the pseudoliberal establishment - led by the NYT - to provide it with a medical controversy pretext that doesn’t actually exist.

This means there are now *six* lawsuits against the Trump administration filed primarily by faith groups, with *dozens* of houses of worship, religious orgs, and entire religious denominations among the plaintiffs.
Taking a break from my Rome coverage:

A third lawsuit against the Trump administration’s new policy increasing the possibility of immigration enforcement in houses of worship has been filed, and notably this is the first one to include a Catholic church.

Proves the long belief I've had that they "they just need to actually know a trans person" theory is bullshit
While U.S. adults overall are split on issues impacting the transgender community, they believe that families and doctors, not the government, should make decisions about medical care for transgender youth.

There has been an implicit agreement between the IRS and undocumented migrants that they can pay their taxes without fear. Many undocumented migrants do so, in part so they can apply for citizenship/visas in the future. Now that trust is going to be abused to potentially deport millions of people.
🚨 NEW 🚨

The IRS is on the cusp of an agreement with ICE to assist with deportations.

The IRS would use confidential taxpayer information to verify addresses of suspected undocumented immigrants ICE is attempting to locate, @jeffstein.bsky.social & I can report.

To answer some quick questions about my latest story:
- It does not apply to the Visa Waiver Program as far as I can see
- It does not impact American citizens
- The ban exclusively impacts transgender foreigners seeking visas in the United States
- It is far more extensive than reported elsewhere
1. Major exclusive breaking news: Marco Rubio may have just banned trans foreigners seeking visas with correct gender markers from US Entry.

A new cable, effective immediately, says visas must contain assigned sex at birth and should be rejected if they don't.

One of the things I’m thinking about watching Survivor and thinking about politics is this: a constant reason why alliances fall apart is when someone thinks (often correctly) that nobody listens to them, which means they’re not really part of the alliance. They’re just being used as a number.
