Hello new followers! I waste a lot of time on here, but when I'm not doing that I sometimes write books. My new one is called Citizen Scholar: Public Engagement for Social Scientists (out in January, orderable now), and it has all you need to prevent ... oh no

Thanks! Good times

Except for the persecution of a small number of activists, nothing they are doing has anything to do with woke students who protest and can't get jobs. I understand politicians lie a lot, and a New Yorker articles is not really going to shape the public narrative, it's just offensive.

They all know, and they know the reporters know, that the indebted, protesting, useless-major students are a tiny fraction of all college students. It's just not credible, and journalists should stop repeating it. Source:

Why do people just report this? May Mailman says that, "Instead of producing citizens who will 'propel our country into the next generation of greatness,' [universities] are, in her view, creating 'indebted students with useless majors who hate our country and like to go to riots.'"

I really like this idea. Even if we don’t get a journal, it seems like incumbent journals could encourage some kind of research note format. I’m still being cited for things that were accurate fifteen years ago and are extremely not accurate now.
Using GSS or ACS or CPS or NLSY to analyze a trend, and then years later ... it changes. Huh! Maybe we should have a Journal of Subsequent Events, to incentivize the original authors to report these developments. They are most likely to notice, and may as well get some credit for showing it.

Here is the updated trend with most of the controls. In JSE I could say: although the absolute size of the gender gap in opposition to pornography has not grown, as both lines are trending toward zero the ratio of women's to men's opposition *is* increasing, so our theory is still correct. JSE!
/6

JSE is a face-saving mechanism for reporting that things have turned out differently, as it gives you a chance to explain what happened while maintaining buzz and channeling new citations to the more recent paper.
/5

Funny thing happened after 2012 (see figure). This is why wee need the Journal of Subsequent Events. The paper is still puttering along at half a dozen citations per year, and apparently no one noticed the trend changed. Why should I bother to tell you this, if it will only hurt me? JSE!

We said opposition to porn declining faster for men was "consistent with the increasingly normative nature of pornography consumption for men, increases over time in men’s actual consumption of pornography, and its increasingly degrading depiction of women." Seemed reasonable. Open version:

In 2015, Lucia Lykke and I published an analysis of GSS (through 2012) that showed US women were more likely than men to favor banning pornography, and the gap was widening. In our model, with control variables, the linear slope for men was steeper than for women. Here's the unadjusted trend:

By my reckoning no modern authoritarian leader has been as unpopular in his capital city as Trump
