If you are interested in people heading households over time, I think all those with RELATE = 1 or 2 is the best category you can use. All those people are householders, IMO.

Ya. I would use relate=1/2 to avoid the changing arbitrariness of selecting spouses by gender, where it used to always be the man but then shifted (and differentiate by sex if needed)

134. In 2024, 13% of people age 18-44 in the US lived alone, the highest percentage ever. The percentage for those age 45-64 (15%) and 65+ (29%) are below their peaks. (For seniors, decline is good if it means less widowhood and more independence, bad if it means hard times for old or young.)
