Recovering arachnopobe me just got surprised by one of the huge spiders that have come in out of the cold. He was skulking in the skirting of a door at about knee height, and I impressed myself by just telling him sternly, "Not cool." without even thinking much about it, after the initial startle.

Sorry, this wasn't super clear when I posted this: it's a 2020 story. But it's emblematic of ICE's approach to managing the people they abduct, and underscores how they can exploit their control over people without status.

Without asylum:

Marks and Spencer wouldn't exist

Queen would have been without a front man

The other queen wouldn't have had a husband

Judith Kerr would never have written The Tiger Who Came to Tea

And thousands of less famous people wouldn't have been teachers, politicians, neighbours, etc

In fact, B&N has been expanding rather a bit recently; their sales are up and they've refreshed their stores. And independent books stores have been growing in numbers too! It's been quite a turnaround for brick and mortar bookstores in the last couple of years. I hope it lasts.
I'm more shocked they're still opening new B&Ns.

A great resource and a chance to remind people what great stuff is out there!
As we approach the end of the year, it's a great time to record things you love! Not just for the Hugo Awards, but in general. The rec sheet is a handy resource for nomination, but also at its heart a rec resource in a loud, busy media environment.

(The hand on the cover is more pink than it was supposed to be, but ... oh well. Otherwise everything looks good.)

Authors, Beware! There's a firm called "ClaimsHero" doing aggressive social media outreach claiming to
"help" you file to get $ in the Anthropic class action. In fact, it's a bait-and-switch, they are luring authors to sign up with them, then OPTING THEM OUT of the class action so they'll get zilch.
