“People in the past be fucking”
the more you read about this stuff, the more that Foucault's point about the exaggeration of Victorian repression rings true. We want to imagine the past as being more prudish than it really is because it makes us feel more free than we really are

Homage is also only used as a pejorative when it comes to Chinese brands. When a mainstream brand like Christopher Ward or Citizen references a Blancpain or Submariner, reviewers say "inspired by," if they mention it at all.

You throw around the term 'conservative' despite the brutal murder Colonel Mustard committed with the candlestick in the conservatory?
There are some truly unhinged bits in the piece about Glasman, as to be expected when dealing with Glasman, but seriously what the actual? That's...one hell of a conflation of terminology.

It's classic literature on TGT on Monday as we remember Emily Brontë on the anniversary of the publication of Wuthering Heights, her first and only novel in 1847 under the pen name Ellis Bell.

It’s hilarious and revelatory that a bunch of giant MAGA/America First X accounts are actually based in Eastern Europe and Nigeria.

this looks very good and I’ll try thx. my much lazier version:

Chop cabbage, add to pan with salt, oil & splash of water, cover till cabbage turns brighter green (not to total softness), remove lid turn up heat, microplane nice pile of frozen ginger on top (grate/ much easier when frozen), sauté

the way the Irish typically cook it is to overcook it, so it releases sulphur and makes you gag

cooking it like this doesn’t do that at all it’s very nice I also will cook cabbage and eat it all week with whatever meat leftovers, etc

The recipe below is quick and easy. You can jazz it up a bit by frying a teaspoon of “panch phoron” in the oil (Bangladeshi 5 spice, equal quantities of cumin, nigella, mustard, fenugreek and fennel seeds) but I actually prefer the plain version below.
Used to hate cabbage as a child because we used to eat it ALL THE TIME but now one of my favourite foods. Cooking it in same way my mum (and countless other Bangladeshi mums) cooked it.

Looks great, I do something similar but with ginger instead of garlic, and mustard seeds, a few fennel or black cumin seeds, and a couple of fenugreek seeds in the oil first. Add shredded carrot. Good hot as a side dish with rice, or a cold salad for several days (but we finish it pretty quickly)

Thank you for this. I will make twice as much as I need, in anticipation of the next day’s lunch. I will also experiment with garam masala in place of turmeric. And with savoy cabbage too. I was a cabbage refusenik until I was in my thirties 🥬

IME, the way to make vegetables not suck is to stir fry them. I've never met a vegetable that didn't taste great when stir-fried with some oyster sauce & a dash of smoked sesame oil.

Suspect some of you find Christmas too much, but it holds a very special place in my heart because of my family - my siblings when I was growing up, and now my wife and children as well. I‘ve written about it quite a bit, most recently last December:
