Stir fry on high heat, constantly turning, til cabbage cooked to degree you like (I like it quite soft). Try to get some caramelisation of the onions and cabbage. Eat with fresh white rice or roti. Keeps well in fridge for about a week. Good cold or amazing re-fried with leftover rice as a stir fry

Sprinkle a teaspoon of ground turmeric and stir well, coating all cabbage

Add cabbage and stir well too coated in oil.

Fry onions, garlic, and chillies in 3 tablespoons of olive oil til soft

Other ingredients prepped - 2 medium white onions sliced, 1 bulb garlic minced, 3 green finger chillies sliced

Used to hate cabbage as a child because we used to eat it ALL THE TIME but now one of my favourite foods. Cooking it in same way my mum (and countless other Bangladeshi mums) cooked it.

Finally got round to making falafel. Came out pretty good. Will put chopped green chilli in next time, didn’t want to experiment this time.

Not quite a rainbow, but closest I can do
November 11, 2025 at 8:10 AM
Of course, you can make a real rainbow with a hosepipe on a sunny day:

Preparing for this and checking that i can indeed make a rainbow. (Physics teachers - this is actually a pretty good analogue of how a rainbow is formed, using a round bottomed flask as my raindrop and light from a slide projector as my sunlight)

Just spent the most money on a thing for myself ever. Love how they’ve matched it to my existing tea-stained ones.

Made a batch of tabbouleh (I like it less herby than some but with a spiced dressing) to go with this. Going to try hom—made falafels as well.

Have failed to make a good hummus at home so far - I need to try the Ottolenghi recipe - but tzatziki is so quick and easy I don’t think I’ll ever buy it ready made again (especially as my own version has a lot more garlic)

Potatoes done now. Cooking them this way (slowly simmering in thick sauce rather than boiling) gives them an amazing texture and flavour. One of my wife’s favourite dishes.

Been up early cooking some of these recipes - dal flavoured with tomatoes and curry leaves and a potatoes cooked in a spicy tomato sauce. Recipes in the blog post in the post below.

Parents! Carers! Anyone thinking of buying a child a "science kit" for Christmas. For the same / less cost, buy a copy of "Recipes for Wonder" and put together a box of household "ingredients" which will let them do actual science and be a much more personal gift alomshaha.com/portfolio/mr...

Have been enjoying receiving the AI generated marketing scam emails which talk about my books in glowing terms. Even more delighted to receive the most recent, which has given me a whole new identity and book

Related to this, my run this morning made me feel incredibly lucky and privileged.

Primary Teachers! I gave a talk about the science and history of timekeeping which seemed to go down really well (see message below). I’m not able to deliver the talk outside London but the book it’s based on is packed with stuff that your pupils will find interesting. www.dk.com/uk/book/9780...

That was exhausting! But seemed to go down well. Probably helped that my talk came with a free gift of a clock to take home.

Bought this a while ago and haven’t got round to reading

Batch of tabbouleh made as well. And it’s only 9am. Been experimenting with this and dressing makes all the difference - today’s has garlic, cinnamon, cumin, coriander, lemon juice, oil.
