Is there any franchise that's made more money and had less impact on wider culture than Avatar?
Looks like Avatar's got a good shot at a $2 billion total globally when all is said and done. It's arguably a more bankable franchise than the Avengers at this point.

I see this on the right - the idea that the existence of foreign academic staff and faculty are evidence of discrimination against natives. It's not discrimination, its selection: academia is a global marketplace, the US is the biggest center of that market. So yes, some foreign talent will win.

It's a quandary to be sure but their neighbors might need to know if they're living next to a violent sadistic armed kidnapper who might also steal their grocery deliveries 🤷
I remember the phrase "they can't be allowed to melt back into society" re: the de-Baathification of Iraq after the war there. Like everything about that experience, the attempt was cynical, stupid, and botched. But there really should be a plan about what we do with guys like these in the future.

A lot of people want to interpret LLMs through the lens of industrialization and automation coming for knowledge workers, but I suspect it's better to see it through the lens of financialization and--to be more precise--late capitalism's tendency to turn everything into a form of gambling...
It's instructive to ask what exactly it is the LLMs do very well. Produce fluent text and are useful for situations where there a near one-to-one mappings between sets of tokens (machine translation, converting code from one language to a other) but they are very lossy for information retrieval
