"Longueuil police force is the embodiment of police reform, the 'avant-garde' of community-oriented policing."

"It was this police force, a reformed police force, that burdened Black and Arab people with oppressive police stops [..] and that finally killed Nooran."

The Killing of Nooran and the End of Community Policing – The Rover
The police shooting of an unarmed teen should call into question the sterling public image of the Longueuil police force and the role of countless reporters and elected officials in creating this…

Canada Post wants to create a new class of flexible, part-time worker that will better compete with Amazon and implement “dynamic routing” so delivery routes can be changed on the fly.

It’s a good example of how Amazon degrades workers’ rights even beyond its walls. Workers are right to push back.

We have had nearly two decades of panic about Free Speech on Campus and not a single case, not even the ones they made up, were as bad as what's happening now
This is the text of the email just sent to hundreds of international students telling them that their visas have been revoked due to activism or social media posts.

Oh yeah? Cool I'm expecting price controls for food, housing and transportation, regulation of the telecoms companies, clean water on all reserves, protection of workers' right to strike... oh no sorry he just means he's gonna make it more expensive to buy products from the US
Trudeau tells Canadians he won’t sugarcoat it: “this is going to be tough.” He says the government will provide direct support to people and industries to help them get through this, “no matter how long this lasts, no matter what the cost”

When I lived in Edmonton, this was a big shock—the city doesn't plow the sidewalks, it makes individual homeowners shovel in front of their home. The result was a patchwork mess rather than a functional and useable network of sidewalks in the winter.

Needless to say, very few people chose to walk.
To all the people in eastern North America in the path of this snowstorm:

You can and should expect your city to plow sidewalks (and bike lanes) like they do for roads.

The technology exists, many cities do it (including Montreal & Ottawa). Choosing not to is a middle finger to pedestrians.

This probably isn’t the developers’ top priority (although it should be), but I’d love to see the Bluesky app have an option to switch to the Julian calendar for those of us who reject the lies of Pope Gregory XIII

a ton of American foreign aid is an indirect subsidy for American agricultural (same as weapons aid) and wholesale cutting it will do a huge hit to the American economy, underrated aspect of all this
“For example, 235,000 tons of wheat was stranded in Houston since there were no USAID workers to coordinate its transportation or ensure security for it…”
