It’s probably futile trying parse what exactly Trump means by “own” in that post, but the international bridge authority is already jointly governed by Canada and Michigan. I assume Trump has his eyes on the toll revenue. gordiehoweinternationalbridge.com/corporate/wh...

Can This Bridge Ease the Troubled US-Canadian Relationship?
Financed entirely by the Canadian government, the new C$6 billion border crossing has been eagerly awaited in both Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. Then came the US trade war.

Canada put up the money for this international bridge because the US wouldn’t do it. The cost is to be repaid over time by tolls. Now that it’s close to opening, Trump says he wants half ownership

The US can't forever lock out China's low-cost and innovative vehicles. Recently, a number of signs point to something changing
Chinese Cars Are Coming to the US — Like It or Not
In a world being conquered by China’s auto companies, one redoubt stands out: The US. It deters Chinese companies with sky-high tariffs and a ban on auto software systems developed or controlled by them. It is also the biggest auto market in the world by revenue and one of the most profitable — China’s auto giants would love to find a way in.

The government has said the quota will have a certain amount dedicated to EVs priced at 35K and under. In a few years that amount will rise to half of the quota
February 5, 2026 at 4:08 PM
(I would note that some Chinese-built EVs that could be imported into Canada under the tariff-free quota will already be cheap enough that they won't need the consumer incentive to be competitive)
February 5, 2026 at 3:26 PM
Canada is bringing back its $5K consumer incentive for buying EVs, but it will decline each year and it is not eligible for any EV built in a country Canada doesn't have an FTA with. So that excludes Chinese built EVs -- including, for ex., Teslas built in Shanghai

The study pointed to Canadian dollar depreciation from late 2024, supply shortages caused by issues like extreme weather, and tariffs.
