The irony of everyone fawning over how Mark Carney is 'standing up' for Canada is that he is simultaneously eroding the few institutions that actually distinguish the Canadian state from the US, and those which theoretically could be used to shield Canadians from the disaster area to the south.

Yeah no shit the "rules based international order" is a lie, it always was, and those of us not in kindergarten always knew it. Carney built his whole career pretending it was real now he wants to play hero for saying it's not. Oh and his solution? "Suck it up, you fucks, this is gonna suck."

Canadian banks feeling great about attempted US overthrow of Venezuelan govt. This gets reported as news, because apparently we should all share in whatever joys Scotiabank is feeling. Elbows fly wherever and whenever the Canadian elite want to make money, an evergreen lesson.

'Watchlists' are used to harass and target marginalized people and community organizers. On the 'bright' side, AI is such garbage tech that it will inevitably make false identifications and lead to more arrests of random people who look a little bit like the targets (a bit of eugenics for a treat).

Will soon be digging back into offering non-credit courses without assignments or assessments, as a spiritual antidote to all of this
One of the worst things about do-called AI is that it pits my students against me. Over decades of teaching, I have built relationships of trust with my students, where I don't bs them about the world they live in, and they don't bs me about the work they do for me about it. "AI" interrupts this.

Anyone who trusts AI is a mark. It's no different from crypto in the sense that it is both idiotic and dangerous, a technology that exists to help people be more wrong more quickly

One of the hardest periods in history to teach properly is WWII, because - for one strange but significant moment - the Anglo-American powers turned against fascism. The war subsequently became a pillar of the self-image of those powers despite it being a complete anomaly that they opposed fascism.

The NDP just propped up the most right-wing budget Canada has seen in, arguably, decades. Ask yourself why the NDP exists at all if it's going to do that. Just join the Liberal Party and stop wasting the energy of activists who want desperately to believe it is something better.
“But, at the same time, Canada [is] facing instability and overlapping crises ... in these challenging times, now's [not] the right time for an election.” (2/2)

Canada actively supported the British war against the people of Kenya, supplying F-48 Sabre fighter jets and a host of military and police supports. A Winnipeg cop named John Timmerman tortured Kenyan prisoners in Nairobi earning the nickname "the Himmler of Kenya."
#OtD 18 Nov 1953 the British Royal Air Force began aerial bombing of Kenya in an effort to crush the "Mau Mau" anti-colonial insurgency. Over the next year and a half they dropped nearly 6 million bombs on the country stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/9039...

Love to see this!
One of my favourite books I’ve read this year and already has an impact on my politics.
“Not only does Canada have a colonial history, it has a colonial present. Perhaps there is still time to prevent Canada from having a colonial future.”- @shipster.bsky.social.

Carney & Canada's statements on Gaza are completely vacuous & shameless

Gaza doesnt need Canada's pity. Canada is still arming Israel. Canada must implement full and immediate arms embargo. And sanction Israel. And suspend all military and trade agreements.

Liberal PM Pierre Trudeau put the head of CUPW in jail for defying his strikebreaking legislation. But the postal workers arguably won that strike by holding the line. Carney may do the same, and I hope for all our sakes that these workers stand their ground. We owe them our support and our thanks.
Air Canada strike:

“We’re going to stay committed to making sure that those workers can do the job that they love doing and actually be able to afford a roof over their heads, to afford caring for their families,” CUPE president just said.

“If it means folks like me going to jail, then so be it.”
