i broadly agree with the thrust of this; I also think woke 1 failed b/c arguments to not use certain language (e.g. "unhoused" replacing homeless), which much of the public chafed at, were used as cover for attacks on the broader goal (e.g. anti-sexual harassment/racism stuff, which elites HATED)
To the extent “woke” was a thing people were mad at, it was mostly that people hate a culture of scolds telling them what words they can use, what things they can enjoy, and then launching “politically correct” alternatives to cultural touchstones.

Funny how no one sketches out where power substations or sewer lines should go—too technical, defer to the pros. But transit rail maps? Everyone’s an expert. Difference is: utilities follow demand. Transit advocates often draw what THEY want and ignore existing riders.
My experience: a discussion that starts with "City Y needs technology X" tends to be far less useful than one that starts with "We need better transit between A, B, and C."

The fundamental issue with leftist Japanese parties is they have nothing to stand on. They really have no vision of progressive economics that’s differentiated, and their messaging about gender equality/LGBT rights fall flat because the LDP isn’t *coded* as anti-those, fairly or unfairly.
I have to wonder what leftist parties in Japan are even doing to stop this.
