Damn, the weekend forecast keeps getting better, I might spend a day in NYC (not counting work) for the first time in months.

The Newark Central Planning Board unanimously approved a six-story, 83-unit residential development at 288 Central Avenue, between Norfolk and Newark streets.

A little surprised this was approved, although maybe Holmdel's logic was they'd rather take senior apartments than the alternative. www.app.com/story/news/l...
Holmdel approves senior apartments in former Vonage building
The Holmdel planning board voted to redevelop a vacant office building formally occupied by Vonage. The building would house 104 senior apartments.

Damn, now that snow is starting to melt a tiny bit, the roads are in horrible shape, and will need a lot of work.

Greg Lalevee (NJ Laborers, might have killed the Turnpike extension by opposing Sherrill) now has competition for most self-defeating union leader. John Samuelsen is going to endorse Blakeman, and soon enough every subway in metro NY will be using OPTO. I can't wait.

Newark State Sen Teresa Ruiz is sponsoring legislation for a $10.5 billion bond measure for school construction. $7 billion would go to former Abbott/SDA districts, with $3.5 billion for the rest of the state. Newark recently has gotten the lion's share of available SDA funding.
Newark, other districts could get $10.5 billion for buildings under proposed vote
The proposal would allocate $7 billion to Newark and 30 other high-poverty districts for construction and urgent repairs, with the Schools Development Authority set to run out of funds by 2030 without...

@thenewjerseyer.bsky.social is Montclair changing their IZO? Someone said that, I haven't seen any articles.

Kind of annoyed that a decision I made a decade ago (buy mutual funds as a long term hold) will blow up my taxes this year, which apparently is a common thing. It paid me a balloon capital gain this year. I reinvested it, so no addl money in my pocket, but big fed tax bill.

Realistically, it will be very hard to beat Mejia in a primary in June. Not unless she does something to make people mad before then. Given district makeup, more likely in '24 or '26 if she has flubs.

If the left doesn't consolidate and pick a candidate in NJ-12, ironically we could very much end up in an opposite situation of NJ-11, where this time, a moderate wins a more progressive district.

My dream is TWA endorses Blakeman for NY Gov and we get OPTO as a result.

If anyone's wondering why the MTA is plunging head-long into the new faregates project, this is the math. A $100m annual return on a $1b investment with a 30-year payback is no-brainer math.
If the $10 million annual savings is close to being true, that’s a good return on a $90 million investment…way more than their bonds’ rate of interest

Source for the $90 million cost: missionlocal.org/2025/06/sf-b...
BART’s new tall fare gates are bringing in an additional ten million dollars a year in revenue that would have been lost to fare evasion.

Last year, Phil Murphy supposedly killed Pompidou as retaliation for unendorsing Tami Murphy. I get that the budget situation is horrible this year, but can't we ask for that money for just general-purpose aid?

Very excited to say that the stars have aligned and NYU Marron/Transit Costs Project have landed a grant that will fund a second edition of Momentum, which will apply the high-throughput framework to major regional rail networks beyond the NY area.

Our three big new cases:
- NJT
- SEPTA
- METRA
The NYU-Marron report on electrification is out: It pairs electrification and other components to develop a high-throughput infrastructure design framework, which slashes time off of existing commuter and inter-city passenger rail services. We call it Momentum -- transitcosts.com/wp-content/u...
