Will I use this for actual posting?
Probably not, if I'm honest.

Still.

Interviewed an audio director recently who told me how an *iconic* character catchphrase came from the voice actor improvising in the booth.

Using AI voices robs you of the chance for spontaneous, funny, ad-libbed performances that could help define your game.
If your game has voice acting, then working with the voice actors is half of your writing process. It's not complete until you've heard it interpreted and reimagined by a voice actor. And they always reimagine it in ways that elevate the writing, in ways you never would have imagined yourself.

Did the news sites announce too early?
Did they already take down their supposed first bundle?
Half the site seems to still be under construction, which is a... Not Great first impression.
(Not even a placeholder "this is who we are/our mission" blog post? really?)

Ok, I'll stop being "mean" now.

I'm here to tell you that voice actors (even very very good ones) are not expensive, more than make up for their cost in the value they bring to your game, and if Baldur's Gate can record real actors for every line of dialogue in the game, so can you for your 100 generic barks or even specific ones.

Anyway, the solution to the James Bond "problem" is blindingly obvious.

There's a Sacred 2 remaster out today, and trailers look incredibly bland and generic, especially compared to promotional material at the time, when they got BLIND GUARDIAN to do a song for the game, and they were NPCs in the game who you had to do a quest for to retrieve their lost instruments.

so... what, pure arrested_development_but_it_might_work_for_us.gif?
because all the moneyghouls that make decisions like this do all day is huff their own farts and smell the possibility of more money?

It's purely managers wanting to live in a world where ideas guys write a prompt and a fully-formed game comes out of the machine (and people buy that slop because their ideas are soooo goooood of course). I don't ascribe it serious motives. It's coming from a place of hating creatives, period.

The thing that strikes me about replacing voice actors with AI slop is that, in the scope of a big AA/AAA production it barely saves money? These people aren't even full time. It's immizerating people because immizerating people is your goal, nothing more.

Love little insights like this because you work your ass off wondering if your lack of success means a lack of talent and then someone really successful bravely speaks out to confirm, no, they are getting the biggest paychecks for the biggest projects but are in fact the dumbest bastards alive
James Bond’s death in No Time to Die is causing a nightmare for the next film. Writers are stuck because Bond “was blown to pieces.”

Anthony Horowitz, author of three 007 novels, says:

“You can't have him wake up in shower and saying it was all a dream."

Cool video on Baldur's Gate II: youtu.be/_yLQ56tGDqE?...

A highlight is how the focus on character interaction & romances was inspired by Final Fantasy 7. This after BG1 took tons of inspiration from RTSes & Jagged Alliance 1.

Influences are far more complex than silly flowcharts can ever sum up.

This is exactly how I hopes Outer Worlds 2 reviews would go too. Having a satire of evil corporations in a capitalist hellscape seemed like an insane game for an evil corporation in a capitalist hellscape to put out, and so few reviews seemed to engage with that fact. It was fuckin crazy to see!

sort of incredible to read a review that doesn't just made a vague nod at AI being bad, but actively reckons with the ways in which falling obsessively to AI usage actively obliterates the artistic intent and integrity of the work you've made.

Yes, this is correct. And the reason is because our capitalist classes have decided that it is not sufficiently profitable, so they're not going to do it.

We must understand this reality. Capital *cannot* be relied upon to address the climate crisis.
