There are lots of very good covers of Beatles songs out there. But I still reckon one of the best is by the wonderfully named female group Fanny, absolutely kicking the shit out of 'Hey Bulldog'. Lovely stuff!

The Detectives - Thicker Than Water (BBC1, 1995). I could do a thread on this one alone. Briefly, damn near perfect Xmas ep. Consistently funny, smooth & deceptively simple plot, well acted, well shot, just the right amounts of melancholy & sentiment, with Xmas radiating every scene.

For our wedding, I came within sparrowfart of persuading the caterers to provide a menu option for "Sausage Surprise", which would have been a plate of mash with a couple of holes where some sausages should obviously have been. They were all for it, but I was advised the guests might lynch me.

So, happy 50th anniversary to Melody Maker’s review of Bohemian Rhapsody: “Queen, with a suitably baroque vocal orchestration, contrive to approximate the demented fury of the Balham Amateur Operatic Society performing The Pirates of Penzance”

-it's none of your business why
-hosts should have several non-alcoholic beverage options
-the holidays can be a tough period for non-drinkers
-many jokes about not drinking are bad
-people are burned out and might just be tired
