This headline makes it sound like they decided to go on a local sightseeing tour rather than turn up at the venue, but actually they just lost

In my experience, talent is a *detriment* to learning.

I didn't have to practice early on so I *didn't know how*. I didn't start to learn how to practice until my 30s! (When much of my life was taken up with parenting, so I didn't have time!)

I didn't start to improve as a musician until my 40s!
I'm going to say this again in case you haven't heard this one: I was a talented writer and it did *nothing whatsoever* because I hadn't put in the work, and I put in the work for ten years (subtracting the bit where I had to quit for my mental health) to write Witchmark

talent alone could *never*

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology
She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

E.g. James Levine was a Very Good Conductor, but he wasn’t the only one; what made him *indispensable* was the fairy dust that 40-foot posters and gal dinners with sponsors confer.
The grotesque paradox in music/academia is that the ‘stars’ are made by the press/PR - there are always a dozen more supremely talented people ready to take their place. But then they are *made* indispensable to sales and so must needs be protected.
this is the same argument that protects abusers in classical music, by the way, & is just as wack, & has the same consequences

I need everyone to know that on the crochet subreddit the mods made a big post about how they're taking a week off because there was too much fighting/political posts. so there's currently no mods on r/crochet and people are being absolutely insane

2) if you’re struggling just now *please* be kind to yourself

This is very true (except in early years). We would do well to consider why children go increasingly from movement to being static the older they get within the education system.
I find it astonishing what we expect of children - don't think I could sit in five hours of lectures every day, five days a week and take in everything.

The Sultana/Jones interview is IMO Exhibit A on why, on TV*, I think soft questions are underrated. She comes across so much worse with Jones just softly going 'let's talk about ideas' than most politicians do with the 'be berated live on BBC One on Sunday' round.

*broadly defining TV interviews
“Anti imperialism means confronting empire which is why we should leave NATO“ is obviously nonsense and I doubt she could explain or defend it. She’s also noticeably struggled even when sympathetic reporters like Owen Jones try to engage her on economics

Indeed, Anne Frank was a teenager who was culturally Dutch, having moved here at age 4, but was not a citizen. For Americans asking what they would do for a non-citizen child facing deportation to an unsafe country they never knew, there is a lot to think about here.

I don't remember this, but Newsround is still generally a good shout for non-catastrophising when there's bad news.
A formative TV memory of mine is watching BBC's Newsround break the news of the Challenger shuttle accident, just minutes after it had happened. And the presenter (Roger Finn) in his woolly jumper being not quite as calm as Newsround newscasters usually were. Anyway, that's 40 years ago today.

This is what always gets me about these "WASPI" campaigners. *I* remember reading about the pension age changes when I was a teenager, thirty years ago. And I am in multiple ways not in the affected demographic.
"I was wilfully ignorant for thirty years that an inequality in my favour had ended".
One of so many reasons I could not cut it in politics: I would not be able to bring myself to go “sorry, you needed…how many years notice to know when you needed to retire?”
Gonna be honest, if the government did give in to this letter (I very much hope they won’t), I will become a Maoist

I love this excuse for 'after Bernard Jenkin was asked about it on air by Matt Chorley, we changed the quote'. Engagingly blatant in its 'come off it'-ness.
They've now sent out a new version of the statement with the mental health part deleted...
