Well I’ve at least now had a pleasant trip down a ‘Jingle Bells’ shaped academic rabbit hole (and don’t worry, it’s safe for now!).
This is one of the maddest things I've ever read.

Truly at odds with all reality.

Also an opportunity to repeat my favourite (clang) conversation with Charles Mackerras who reinstated the 3rd Hammerschlag in his 80s on the grounds that nobody was going to assume anything supernatural if he keeled over after a performance at his age....
My new favourite video of all time.

“The conductor John Andrews seems to have an unerring touch when approaching music which is little known, having been little performed. Samantha Ege is a most persuasive soloist, and she makes light of the formidable technical difficulties. All those involved are to be congratulated” 😍🎁
AVERIL COLERIDGE-TAYLOR: Piano Concerto | Orchestral Works - British Music Society
Avril Coleridge-Taylor has been overshadowed by her father Samuel, but also by her heritage as the daughter of someone regarded as being of mixed descent...

A real honour to appear *twice* on this list!

“The most satisfying thing about this album, however, is Williams’ magisterial approach to her writing for orchestra, followed very closely by John Andrews’s and the BBC Philharmonic’s devotion to what she’s written.”
Another end of year review has been released, focusing on a selection of four albums recorded by BBC Philharmonic Orchestra! Our intrepid blogger Kathleen McGowan offers rich insights on these releases here: wophil.org/wpa-2025-in-...

Delighted to see our Resonus Classics disc with @errollynwallen.bsky.social and the BBC Concert Orchestra featured here!

“The pieces on this album draw from Wallen’s 30-years-and-counting career, and the present a wholly joyful and high-spirited portrait of the composer”
🎼 Our year-end review of albums continues with some exciting contemporary composers -- Gabriela Ortiz, Tania León, Asuka Kakitani, and Errollyn Wallen. We include links to streaming sites and more here:

And from a huge array of available evidence, deciding which actually matter, which were causal and not just coincidental, and which illuminate rather than distract. By all means hand over to AI but then you’ve resigned your entire purpose and judgemental skill…
A big part of being a historian is being a detective! Who did this? Why? Where? Why does it matter in the grand scheme of things? You have to learn how to probe, how to uncover, how to read against the grain, how to find unusual sources, how to interpret those sources. How to piece together a puzzle
It also robs students of learning *how* to research.

Meanwhile, it being Saturnalia, we are reverting to traditional gender roles for the day as I observe the baking of cinnamon buns from the armchair…
Such is our commitment to inverting gender roles, my partner has just suggested that we watch 'Die Hard', while I am preparing tonight's dinner.

‘O Come All Ye Faithful’ began as a rallying cry for exiled Jacobites planning violent overthrow of the British Monarchy and State. Seems good to remember that that it’s really not that long ago that we thought Catholics were incapable of being loyal and assimilating to British Values.
