This is as bad as anything proposed by Reform.

Leaving refugees in permanent limbo and unable to build a new life in the UK would be a complete abdication of our humanitarian responsibilities

UK set to limit refugees to temporary stays
Shabana Mahmood is expected to say the era of permanent protection for refugees is over, in major changes to the UK's asylum and immigration system.

What does AI even mean in this context?! www.theguardian.com/education/20...

It's never clearly explained, it sounds like there's some kind of formula - why would AI even be theoretically helpful here? Uncritical slop reporting of uncritical slop usage - complete absence of journalism. Come on!

Unions decry move, saying it will put more pressure on headteachers without tackling absence from classrooms

Let’s take a look at the whole “there are too many black people on TV” thing, shall we?

After Pochin claimed Black people in TV adverts “made her mad”, all her supporters tried to use 👇🏼 as their excuse for why she was somehow justified in her overt racism.

Spoiler - she isn’t! 🤨

Bizarrely, I've never really touched Python, and have no meaningful connection to it, but nevertheless - hats off to them for showing how to stand up and put principles first. Always good (if all too rare) to see a tech community with a decent moral core.
TLDR; The PSF has made the decision to put our community and our shared diversity, equity, and inclusion values ahead of seeking $1.5M in new revenue. Please read and share. pyfound.blogspot.com/2025/10/NSF-...

The thing to understand about fascism is that most people you know will be bought off. Bought with promises of peace and stability, bought with business opportunities or paid with actual cash. Most people aren't going to resist. Get used to it and get used to operating in that environment.

Treating the far right moment in the UK as a manifestation of displaced economic concerns or social media radicalisation - these are signs of a country that still refuses to fully come to terms with the history, depth and breadth of its ongoing racism problem.

I'm excited to share what I've been working on with @erikjee.bsky.social: RustNL's #rustlang Maintainers Fund!

Many people and companies contributing to Rust, but there are fewer and fewer paid positions for general maintenance (reviews, cleanups, etc). We need to fix that.

We're excited to announce a new initiative to support the Rust Project, our Rust Maintainers Fund!

We are setting out to employ 6 full-time maintainers and 6 interns in 2026 to make sure #rustlang is well maintained and bugs and contributions get the attention they need.

That this is being done by in effect saying, no, no, all these years the Equality Act 2010 was actually a trans bathroom ban is such a fucking farce. If ghouls in the Labour party want to do this, they should have the courage to bring it to parliament rather hiding behind the SC and a bs quango.

This does sound like a cracking read, if (as seems likely, given the balance of probability) a free copy doesn't migrate to my doorstep, it'll have to go on the increasingly bankruptcy-inducing books-to-be-bought list.
I'm giving away this signed 1st edition h/b of my new novel (it has a tiny jacket rip which means I wouldn't sell it) to one person who reposts this.

You might like it if you like:
Folkloric creatures
Old records
Intricate psychedelic stories
The idea of circular time

All shares much-appreciated.

What would a social network look like in an ideal world? I'm not entirely sure it's this... I dashed off some quick thoughts while they were still in my mind, I'll come back and refine further later, perhaps...

So Keir Starmer is going to say that Growth is the answer eh? Well, I'm glad they've learned the lesson about promises they can't keep and targets they don't know how to influence.

If only somebody had thought of growth before! Bet all those politicians aiming for stagnation feel pretty silly now.

Is there a reason I ask that the Times are using a picture of asylum seekers in a boat to describe rules for migrants who came on legal routes such as skilled worker visas for doctors?
Tough new conditions to be imposed on migrants who want to settle in the UK will not apply to more than a million people who arrived in the UK under the post-Brexit immigration surge
Labour’s tough new rules will not apply to migrants already in UK

Fascinating take from Rachel Reeves that you can support racist policies without being racist. With all due respect, no, you can't. As Tutu said about oppression, choosing neutrality puts you on the side of the oppressor. That was neutrality; you shouldn't need to question actual support.
