The main difference is that the GWBush era people felt an obligation to at least make everything they did look like it was a humanitarian effort, which did create *some* barriers on their potential worst action. I am not confident these guys will bother with those kind of restraints.
1) Venezuela has a government.

2) This is being thrown together at the last minute by people who—amazing as it sounds—are even less intelligent, qualified, and competent than the GWBush-era dunces who tried to make imperialism happen in Iraq & Afghanistan and failed miserably. What could go wrong?
With Nicolás Maduro out of power, the Trump administration is racing to assemble an interim governing structure for Venezuela.

One thing to mentally prepare for is that, no matter what's about to happen in Venezuela, Trump is going to say everything is wonderful and for a long while the mainstream political press is doing to just reflexively report that.

We likely won't know how it's actually going for a couple of years.
For anyone not old enough to understand what happened in 2004.

This was super prevalent.

And very few people in America took heed.

Not gonna lie, an Oregon GOP anti-tax rally seems kind of quaint in 2026.
Live look in to this right wing protest 10 minutes after it was scheduled to start.

Give it a week.
GOP Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks: "We don't want to have troops on the ground. Iowans don't want that, Americans don't want that. We do not want nation building. This is not what's going to occur."

On fairly basic podcasts people think they are clever by bringing up Iraq / Afghanistan; and just jump right over Libya, Syria etc. as if the don’t even remember.

You have to assume everything he says might well be complete fabrication - but it's worth noting that if this *is* true, we're talking about returning to a 19th century, British-style imperialism.
Trump: "We're there now, but we're going to stay until such time as the pop -- proper transition can take place. So we're gonna stay until such time as -- we're gonna run it essentially."

This is not a defense of Trump or his current military actions, but I cannot remember a single decade since in my life where Presidents have not used the military in exactly this fashion, and I have never seen Congress do anything about it.

It's terrible & illegal, but this is not a *Trump* thing.

Hi! Old guy here! [waves cheerfully]

This is not a GenZ thing. It is a young person thing, and has been true since basically forever. In the same way white people don't like to pay for services for black people, or middle-classers for rich or poor people, the youngs don't like to pay for the olds.

This is terrible news. I've never heard of a player needing to have surgery on both ankles; I'm not even sure how likely it is to fully come back form such a thing.

Wishing her a speedy and full recovery. Basketball is better with Collier in it.

Lynx's Collier to undergo surgery on both ankles
Napheesa Collier will undergo surgery on her ankles after injuring them during the WNBA season, sidelining her for four to six months and forcing her to miss the upcoming Unrivaled season.

Earlier this week @erikgunderson.bsky.social gave us a bit of his first ever batch of home made whiskey, which I sort of assumed was going to be OK at best because, ya know, "first try at home-made whiskey."

It's freaking phenomenal. As big a kudos as I can give Erik for what he's crafted.

Curtis Yarvin, JD Vance’s friend & ideological influence, ended 2025 by claiming “only Hitler spoke the truth” about “too many subjects” & “Hitler was a genius.”

Extremism isn’t fringe on the right. Once marginal online extremists like Yarvin are influential at the highest levels of government.

I honestly feel bad about thinking this but as much as I hate that all of this is happening, part of me relishes seeing it happen to someone like Lawrence Jones who was happy enough to help a bunch of propagandists fan the flames that ignited the fire in exchange for money & fame.

Wild this didn’t work
I’ll say it again—Trump needs to be straight with the American people and explain what his strategy is and what the hell he’s doing in the Caribbean.
President Trump says in an interview with WABC radio in New York that the U.S. had “knocked out” a Venezuelan facility, a move that would be a major escalation in U.S. military strikes.

Again: they thought they’d win a shattering court victory with the Harry Potter lady’s money, then the public would rise up in gratitude, salute them as heroes and stomp all over transgender people on their behalf. That hasn’t happened, because the public mostly aren’t vicious cranks, like they are.
