Okay, invisible scaffolding aside, I would *die* getting up at 4am. I want to die getting up at 6 to go to freaking Disney World; all my brain does before 8am is scream like a terrified goat.
Not pictured: Haruki Murakami’s wife, or indeed whoever is cooking, cleaning, paying bills, running errands, doing the laundry, answering emails, etc

like yea his routine is goals, but let’s not lie to ourselves about all the invisible work others are doing to enable him to have that routine

Bruce Springsteen making it CRYSTAL FUCKING CLEAR that *this* song is not pro-government.
I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.

Kat is a really great editor, I highly recommend her!
I admit, it feels very weird to be advertising for clients with everything that is going on here, but bills must still be paid. I have openings in my editing calendar. I do mainly developmental editing on novels and novellas. More info here: www.kathowardbooks.com/editing Always happy to answer qs!

For those who don't know this story, which I first shared six years ago today....

This one time I got my days wrong at work and ended up alone in a room with my boss and the President of Ireland while I was on ketamine.

Holy shit. I bought a bunch of books and racy comics from Dreamhaven in 2024 and joked that I was from Florida and expected my haul to get me arrested when I went home—they told me they’d pay my bail.
Remember the other day when I was saluting my friend Greg Ketter, owner of Minneapolis’ DreamHaven Books? This is him the following day. Greg will never say this, so I will — now is a great time to buy books from DreamHaven. Support Americans who stand up vs. 🧊. dreamhavenbooks.com

The story told in this thread is just bonkers, but adds a whole 'nother layer of risk, uncertainty, terror, and Monty Python to traveling by bus.
I just woke up from a nap and somehow while I was asleep, everyone on the bus has figured out we are not going to the right place

Liz, I adore you but what the fuck? You know what would make the US work better for Americans? Abolishing ICE.
The American people want to know:

Why are we putting money, time, and energy into running Venezuela instead of making the United States work better for Americans?

I saw Goody Proctor at the wine mom gang at the LAX Radisson.
Trump, during an "economic" speech today in Detroit, can't help but fixate on "wine mom gangs," saying they're "doing these fake riots." They go practice. They go to areas, they take hotel rooms, and they all practice together. It’s a whole scam. We’re finding out who’s funding all this stuff."

I’m not sure I have a sacred book? Seamus Heaney comes close, but it would feel wrong to be sworn into office in the US with another country’s poet. I think it’d depend on what office (federal or state) and then I’d choose something appropriate to it?
Ok, everyone, what book is sacred enough to you to get sworn in on?
Strange takes on Mayor Zamdani swearing his oath on the Qu’ran. It has nothing to do with church & state. The point of the oath is for the person swearing in to do so upon some text that is sacred TO THEM. Some Presidents swore in w/o any book. John Quincy Adams was sworn on a law book. His choice.

My then-toddler charmed the members of 2 Live Crew—whom we passed in a corridor of the local radio station—with his enthusiastic description of the puffer fish we’d just seen at the children’s museum.
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

Definitely more than a feeling, with a solid amount of information to start with, but I learn about them/figure things out about them as I write them. Depending on the character I do know more than is likely to end up on the page.
Fiction writers: how well do you tend to know your characters? Are they mostly a feeling and the information you know about them is just enough to support the writing? Or do you know much more about them than will ever be revealed to readers?
