As far as I'm aware, no superhero has a rogues gallery quite as consistently *bald* as Superman's ferocious flock of follicly-challenged foes. Dozens of chrome-domed criminals have made Superman the ire of their depilated deviousness over the decades, so let's meet SUPERMAN'S BALDEST FOES!

No matter how well-informed or well-intentioned you are, I’m not sure you can appreciate how INSANE this is if you haven’t worked in a research lab
“The prohibited activities would include joint research, co-authorship on papers, and advising a foreign graduate student or postdoctoral fellow. The language is retroactive, meaning any interactions during the previous 5 years could make a scientist ineligible for future federal funding.”

the thing about this entire Megyn Kelly situation is that many of the victims are alive and vocal and Virginia Giuffre wrote a book before she died and so nobody actually needs to be debating the meaning of the term “pedophile” because we KNOW EXACTLY HOW THE HIGHLY VULNERABLE VICTIMS WERE HARMED

The argument is “why didn’t we get that kind of investigation from the Times,” instead of the trans panic/Gaza panic/Zohran panic/here’s who the hell “Chris Rufo” is and all the other “We Didn’t Start the Fire” lyrics from Hell that the paper has instead pushed in the last nine years
I am not defending Landon’s relationship with Epstein. In fact, the NYT didn’t even try to defend it. He left the paper. What I’m saying is that a piece of investigative journalism that exposes a secret, criminal act such as statutory rape requires far more than what is in these emails.

it's been hard to put this feeling into words, but we've spent the past couple of decades being lectured to and patronized by an elite class that spent its free time joshing with jeffrey epstein about his little sex abuse empire while lecturing us about how out of touch we are

Ford is a good point of comparison. I’d say that functionally speaking, the Biden admin’s handling of Trump amounts to a de facto pardon. bsky.app/profile/high...
As it turned out, Biden was actually Ford without a Nixon. Yes he got elected in, but he pretended to be caretaker when his primary task was to smooth over the wrinkles and try to return to normalcy whatever that is.
Thinking about how Biden predicated his entire reelection campaign on “saving the soul of our nation” while his DOJ just sat on a mountain of evidence for three distinct Trump scandals, any of which would have put him in jail for life and feeling indescribably fine.

We already saw it with Covid
It strikes me that it’s going to be up to us to make sure there is a cultural memory for what’s been happening in the last 15 years. It’s clear that if we don’t force a drastic change of perspective on basically every institution, all of this will get memory holed or “reinterpreted” to be less awful

Wow, everything about this mod team gets worse and worse

I have been on message boards run by literal teenagers with less drama
Even if you're completely on Bluesky's side on this, thinking that quoting a Johnny Cash lyric in an obvious joke about a Johnny Cash article should be treated like a serious death threat,

What the fuck do you mean, "Our mod team's turnaround time on responding to Death Threats is a month?"
CORRECTION: The post was made on Oct 10. Due to a backlog in cases, our mod team didn’t review and take action until Nov 11, which is when we engaged with the account owner about the reason for suspension.

WHY INDEED???

Couldn’t be that our culture considers sexual access to pubescent children a potent and reliable signal of power, and that Epstein both flaunted that access and served as a gatekeeper for it for other grasping social climbers??
Something that’s so striking in these emails is how…unimpressive Epstein is. He comes off as a pompous, sub-literate lech. Yes everyone is so mortifyingly solicitous of him! All fawning and flattery! Why?????

That’s not the answer, Chris

We all know the answer but it’s considered rude to say it

Which is kind of why we’re here
I think the banal answer is: he’s very rich and powerful and good at networking and this how people act around very rich and powerful people.

this is actually really something. The NY Times stuff is bonkers.
As all this disgusting Epstein shit starts surfacing more and more, I hope we don't lose sight of the fact that apparently every major media outlet knew everything and instead spent their time money and energy attacking the trans community.

Hey so “underage girls” are…children. The word you’re looking for is children. They’re not like, women-in-waiting or women-lite or whatever. They’re children. I think some of you are very uncomfortable with what that means for you but it is still true.

I don’t know at this point if there is enough evident to say “the New York Times, institutionally, was a co-conspirator with Epstein” but it’s basically beyond doubt at this point that at least one employee of the paper were co-conspirators and used their position at the paper to help affect that
Fall 2017: Then-NYT reporter literally warning Epstein that someone is "digging around again."

I tend to think the audacity is part of the point. This is for fun. It’s a bonding activity. If it was any trouble, they wouldn’t do it. If they couldn’t use it as a reliable but deniable signal of their power and impunity, they wouldn’t do it.

It’s for fun.
It's wild. They were unabashed in their cruelty and depravity and never expected to be caught. Like the audacity is NUTS.
These guys sure were prolific emailers.

Landon Thomas Jr of the New York Times got told by Jeffrey Epstein that Trump walked into a glass door bc he was so busy staring at girls in Epstein's house and didn't print it. wild that the Times didn't consider that newsworthy.

The value of reading history is you know that in 1860 there were abolitionists who were so demoralized that they thought chattel slavery would be permanent. 5 years later those still alive had lived to see its end.

Even the most tepid and cautious (and you shouldn't be either) version of what we know about Trump/Epstein, if you think it's something that really merits attacking Trump at all, by necessity implies he must be removed from office. You can't shy away from saying that without seeming disingenuous.

So on Epstein, the Democratic position should be "Trump should resign." If you are a Democratic elected, practice saying "We demand the president's resignation" in front of a mirror as many times as it takes until the dry-heaving that comes from having a phobia about actually doing politics passes.

while i can understand not wanting to comment on every case, it necessarily means that users start asking questions about why sarah kendzior cops a suspension but jesse singal does not. opaque and inconsistent moderation does not inspire trust, nor does it foster safety.
Our policy has been not to comment on individual accounts. You end up having to litigate every case in public, and we don’t have the capacity for infinite debates in public.

Then there’s also the consequences such as the increased litigation and bad actors gaming your systems.

Journalist friends, you know what to do.

Sarah Kendzior was suspended, she doesn’t know why, and the head of T&S said he won’t confirm whether or not the suspension was intentional unless media requests hit a threshold
We usually do that in response to media requests once they hit that threshold. I’ll try not to weigh in here, since that’s still details of an individual case. An interesting topic for a separate write up though, without discussing case specifics.
