So I have a book out! You can find details and links to buy it at my website and my linktree, both of which are linked in my bio!
Me, in the bedroom, can faintly hear @scottyd89.bsky.social’s podcast: Huh, that’s a lot of references to the antichrist, I wonder …

Wanders out to the living room, looks at husband’s phone: It IS Behind the Bastards on Peter Thiel!

Honestly I’m mostly surprised he didn’t do the top half in gold-colored script stickers.

Definitely more than a feeling, with a solid amount of information to start with, but I learn about them/figure things out about them as I write them. Depending on the character I do know more than is likely to end up on the page.
Fiction writers: how well do you tend to know your characters? Are they mostly a feeling and the information you know about them is just enough to support the writing? Or do you know much more about them than will ever be revealed to readers?

Really enjoyed Wake Up Dead Man, but I’m still waiting for my honest to god southern gothic Benoit Blanc mystery.

I cannot believe I’m actually going to post this, but … as a Florida native who is married to a politics and news junkie, while I would not say Florida is “in play” for 2026, the results of the Miami mayor’s race and the various other things people are looking at are def worth some side-eye.

Typo in a book description: “the evil spirit, Jeff ...” Seems a bit pedestrian, but you know what, I applaud the novelty of naming your malevolent force Jeff.

Then the disappointment of realizing it’s a typo.

Suppose it’s up to me, now. Jeff Sauron, master of dark magic and backyard grilling.

Since it's a big weekend for consumerism, I just want to put out there that buying an indie author's book in any format is "shopping small" no matter where you choose to buy it from.

Are you planning to give gift cards this Christmas? Have you considered putting them inside a really cool card that the giftee could decorate with after?

Lucky for you, I know a guy!

Oh yeah, the prompt: You’ve been kidnapped. The characters from the last TV show you watched are trying to rescue you. Who’s coming to save you?
That’s the entire plot of the last show I watched. I’m definitely going to have to escape on my own. (At least I’ll get a dog out of it.)

In other news, I am reading a book that’s 1,000+ pages long, and I have to wonder how many pages it would be if the author wrote paragraphs longer than 2 sentences.

Will my desire to know the Big Plot Secret outlast my irritation at the way this book reads like a Bluesky thread? Guess we’ll see!

Does this mean that @scottyd89.bsky.social is now gayer than @jkasonetc.bsky.social? Or is marriage disqualifying both of them?

In The Story & the Engine, the Doctor refutes the Barber's claim to be Anansi, Dionysus, Sága, Bastet and Loki with personal memories of the first four. He leaves out Loki: a hybrid trickster, liar and shapeshifter, normally male but sometimes female, who lives among gods but isn't one of them. Hmm.

… I am in this picture and my kid is laughing at me.
It's a great cosmic joke that neurodivergence both runs in families and gets diagnosed based on parent reports. I was diagnosed at 30 because a man who has eaten potatoes every day for 57 years and a woman who collects loose buttons decided I was a perfectly normal child.

I need to create some folklore for the current book to reference, so I decided to dig through the ancient stuff I cannibalized back in 2007 to write the first version and see if there’s anything in there to screw around with.
