Ukrainian-American focused on the War in Ukraine until this terrible conflict's conclusion. Fundraising for Amicus Ukraine NGO.
These people have been put through hell over nothing. At least they're free now. How many less publicized cases are there, that are just as egregious?!
Yesterday, five-year-old Liam and his dad Adrian were released from Dilley detention center. I picked them up last night and escorted them back to Minnesota this morning.

Liam is now home. With his hat and his backpack.

War crimes do not justify war crimes. Especially not if it’s unrelated actions from decades ago, by different people from different regimes, used to justify atrocities today.

Nobody is forcing Russia to commit horrible crimes just because someone else did, does, or might do something bad too.

For years, an online meme phrase spread in the Ukrainian segment of internet, saying that a pedophile lobby was working against Ukraine. Seeing how many anti-Ukrainian figures show up in the Epstein files, from US elites to officials in Slovakia, it no longer feels like a joke

This genuinely reminds me of Kherson when russia first occupied it. Thousands of people came out in peaceful protest of russian occupation, and were violently dispersed with tear gas.

ICE is acting like an occupier in American cities.
I was there. They were indiscriminately firing multiple canisters into a huge peaceful crowd. Fucking cowards

The massive right-wing media and associated fever swamps, I think, play a bit part in why authoritarianism is able to blossom here faster than benchmarks.

Emerging authoritarian regimes need to build out media and propaganda. We already had one for decades pickling people in grievance and deceit.
New from me: It is not just that the US is experiencing democratic backsliding. Authoritarianism has emerged more quickly than in other benchmark countries.

This graph from John Burn-Murdoch sums it up. 🧵

This is why I am frustrated when someone like Jamelle Bouie (otherwise an incredibly smart and perceptive observer) under plays Trump's ability to steal the midterms.

It's not binary. You don't have to have ICE shutting down every voting location in a state for the elections to be compromised.
Today in life under competitive authoritarianism

Again, you don’t have to believe me. You can just listen to the guy who literally invented the concept:

I talked with Applebaum before the new year, and even before the current raids on election administration offices in Georgia. Even then, it was clear that 2026 was the year Trump would go after election administration, which makes the midterms incredibly important.

If it feels bad, that's because IT IS bad.

I do think Iran would be the one place where Trump's reckless belligerence could actually do some good. Which is why I don't think he'll do it.

“In theater.”

In. Theater.

In.

Theater.

They want so desperately to be cool tactical soldier dudes that they’ll wage war on America itself to make that silly, childish fantasy a reality.
Q: Can you be specific about how many ICE and CBP agents are currently operating in the state?

HOMAN: 3,000. There's been some rotations. They've been in theater a long time. Day after day, can't eat in restaurants, people spin on you, blowing whistles at you. But my main focus now is draw down

Russia seized a major Moscow airport (4th busiest, according to Wiki) and then just auctioned it off.

They tried to get 132bn rub, ended up getting 61bn rub.

I wonder if this will be booked as direct revenue for the state, helping to reduce the budget deficit?
A subsidiary of the company that owns Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport, became the new owner of the Domodedovo airport following the auction. The full results will be released tomorrow including the winning bid.

As a veteran who’s deployed, I know exactly what “in theater” means. It’s a military term for operations in foreign countries. Using it to describe Minneapolis isn’t accidental…and I can’t overemphasize how dangerous that language shift is.

One of the hardest things to explain to people who aren’t here is the very real feeling that we are in a war against the federal government. Not only are we occupied by unaccountable armed, masked paramilitaries, but we are constantly aware our neighbors might be abducted in the blink of an eye.
Was he actually approaching Minnesota as a regime change

These are the Haitians attacked by Vance in 2024 at the urging of Canadian neo-Nazi Geoff Martin, aka "Captive Dreamer," who he appears to follow closely.

They're currently here legally. The admin is abruptly making them illegal, then removing them in a 1940s-style militarized cleansing campaign.

I know all eyes are on Minneapolis, but there's a fast-approaching nightmare in Springfield, Ohio.

Trump is revoking protected status for tens of thousands of Haitians living there on Feb. 3.

Reportedly, on Feb. 4, 1000 ICE agents are arriving to remove this population. Ethnic cleansing.

Powerful stuff. Shades of Maidan.
Ian Austin, an Army veteran, was arrested for protesting ICE in Minneapolis. But he’s continued protesting. Senior reporter @julialurie.bsky.social spoke to him.

“When they say, ‘Why would you be out here?’ How the fuck could I not be out here?” he says. “My nation is under attack."

I just assume most eulogies and wedding speeches are generated by chat gpt now because it’s largely well meaning people who have been sold on the idea that this is a tool to help you do “a good job,” when the actual point of you being up there is to say what you’re feeling even if it’s clumsy.

I'm gonna make a database of people who are kind, generous, and good in bed and make sure everyone knows.
TOM HOMAN: “We’re going to create a database where those people that are arrested for interference, impeding and assault, we’re going to make them famous. We’re going to put their face on TV. We’re going to let their employers, in their neighborhoods, in their schools, know who these people are.”
