I am absolutely living for this swearing-in venue!
EXCLUSIVE: @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social will be sworn in as mayor on midnight on January 1 inside the old abandoned City Hall subway station, saying that he sees the venue as a symbol for the aims of his upcoming administration.

The mayor-elect will kick off a new era by throwing things back to an older one.

Watch a 7 year old have more compassion for homeless New Yorkers in the subway than your typical centrist marinating their brains on posts on X and The New York Post.
Two weeks ago I spent the whole day at the Museum of the Moving Image to listen to New Yorkers. This is what Liam shared with me.

I always try to emphasize this: in the big picture, the median liberal, aka the kind of person who donates to ActBlue, or is a campaign volunteer, or who makes up part of one of many of the legacy liberal organizations, is to the left of the median liberal think tanker or Congressman on Palestine.
The latter very feverishly thinks Israeli ultranationalism is just plainly good and that Palestinians should suffer under it for eternity and also that the US should for whatever reason underwrite this arrangement with its full soft and hard power

Has anyone written the definitive piece about Jake Sullivan’s world-historic errors on Gaza and Israel that got Trump elected, and how he and his team were a bunch of overconfident, uninformed ninnies who should be nowhere near power ever again?

Good news that throws into sharp relief how craven so many hospital systems complying in advance was. The legal attacks from the federal government can absolutely be fought and defeated. Institutions that choose not to are choosing to treat trans people as expendable.
On Wednesday, a federal judge in Pittsburgh blocked parts of the Justice Department’s invasive subpoena seeking personally identifiable information about those minor transgender patients at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center who are or have received gender-affirming medical care.
Breaking: Federal judge in Pittsburgh blocks DOJ's invasive trans care subpoena
The latest loss for DOJ, regarding the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's patients, also brings news that DOJ has started scaling back its requests following its many losses.

A new NYC City Council bill would create an agency deploying mental health teams to respond to certain 911 calls, advancing a priority of Mayor-elect Mamdani. And it has strong early support. From @nytimes.com, one way the new admin is seeking to reshape local government:
City Council Introduces Bill to Create Mamdani’s Community Safety Agency
The proposed Department of Community Safety would send mental health teams to respond to 911 calls, rather than the police, according to Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s plans.

When I teaching the Holocaust I note the Holocaust museum’s definition of a concentration camp is a prison whose inmates are denied due process. These are by definition concentration camps.
These are concentration camps. No other way to describe them. Truly horrific, and none of it surprising in the least.
30 minutes. Some deportees described sexual assault. Detainee describes the guard sexually assaulting most detainees. Lights left on all day. Prisoners not given clean water.

Now the DHS tour. Nobody spoke to the detainees. Noem's video was in a different area of the prison.

this, from Bari Weiss's 9pm editorial call, is just complete and utter horseshit. she can't even do damage control right

One big takeaway from Mamdani bringing YIMBYs into his transition is that advocates can often gain a lot of power by

1.) having useful answers to questions and accurate information

2.) being reasonably polite and pleasant to elected officials

3.) understanding the actual mechanics of government
