When Mayor-elect Mamdani takes office on January 1, he will control over 6,300 miles of streets throughout the five boroughs.

Reducing car dependence is one of the best ways to reduce costs for New Yorkers. Owning a car costs nearly $9,000 annually, while taking transit costs just $1,500.
In the final days of his term, former Mayor Eric Adams announced that DOT would reduce the speed limit for cyclists in Central Park from 20 miles per hour to 15 mph. Mayor Mamdani should reverse this misguided decision before it takes effect mid-February.

Hey, New Jerseyans — congestion pricing is helping you, too:

"The majority of drivers’ time savings has accrued to those traveling outside the toll zone entirely — for instance, those commuting from Brooklyn to Queens or within Northern New Jersey."
Congestion Pricing’s Unexpected Winners: Suburban Drivers
NYC’s controversial toll program hasn’t just sped up trips inside Manhattan, a new paper finds. It’s easing traffic in outer boroughs and neighboring counties.

Yesterday's deadly crash in Bath Beach is devastating, terrible news.

Amira is the 15th person, the sixth pedestrian, and the second child killed on the streets of New York City so far in 2026.

The City must recommit to Vision Zero, lowering speed limits and fully funding DOT.

The Citi Bike rate keeps going up, even while most of the bikes remain trapped in the snow, completely unusable.

Bike share is a form of public transit, but the system's private owner, Lyft, isn't stepping up to the plate. New York commuters deserve better.

Vision Zero means building a world where zero people are killed or seriously injured in preventable crashes.

Developed in Sweden, Vision Zero was brought to the U.S. in 2014 as a result of our organization’s efforts.

It’s a strategy now adopted across five continents.

Yesterday, we took a trip up to Albany to talk to state lawmakers about the Stop Super Speeders bill, along with the rest of the NYS Safe Streets Coalition's legislative package!

New York must slow down the worst-of-the-worst reckless drivers on our roads.

"At the same time Citi Bike's service got a lot worse, Lyft, which operates Citi Bike and is responsible for clearing its docks of snow, just made it more expensive."

Open Streets create jobs and increase safety. They also increase fun!

The City Council is considering Intro 0270, which would expand Open Streets on holidays and other significant dates — exactly when New Yorkers need extra space the most.

With the 2024 passage of Sammy’s Law, the City was granted the authority to lower speed limits to 20 mph.

But the Adams administration implemented it on just 1.5% of eligible streets.

In 2025, 82% of New Yorkers killed in traffic were killed on streets eligible for Sammy’s Law.

Open Streets create jobs. Expand and fully fund the program!

"At those 200 or so locations, more than 67,200 jobs were created — with nearly a majority of those slots (46 percent) created at the 62 locations that had an open street for all five years between 2020 and 2024."
A report from NY state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli reveals that job growth is more robust on most of the city's open streets, with more than 74 percent of the non-school locations adding retail and restaurant jobs.

Traffic crashes killed 206 New Yorkers in 2025, tied for the safest year since 1910.

More than 200 deaths in a year is still far too many. The goal of Vision Zero is zero.

Getting there will require redesigning streets, lowering speed limits, and daylighting every intersection.

"There’s a lot of data about super speeders — but it’s dispersed among hundreds of datasets from dozens of places... Luckily, with the right tools... we can quickly and easily organize data about the worst-of-the-worst repeat speeders in New York State into a clean database."
