As someone who loves technology I’ve never seen a new tech with as many bad tradeoffs as GenAI. It actively harms so many people and as Alex points the valid criticisms are around the political economy of AI.

The child mortality discourse is a bit of a corollary to my viewing of Hamnet last weekend. What would Agnes and William have given for modern medicine? We are so fortunate to live now.
Yes, yes they did, including a substantial percentage of all children born, well into the early 20th century. You can google child-mortality charts and everything.

People born after 1945 were almost literally the first generation in human history not to experience mass death.
before antibiotics did people just die all the time from everything?

Talarico has real Obama Energy (laudatory). I have no idea if any Democrat can get over the line in Texas, but this guy is as skilled as they come.
Colbert posted the interview online. I do wonder if CBS and the FCC are aware of the Streisand effect? The interview has been up for 8 hours and has just over half a million views.

Trump has lost the culture. But what if the universal conventional wisdom—that he won the culture in the first place—was never true? What if our warped media environment, then Trump's victory, created an illusion of MAGA cultural dominance that is now slipping. This is a long one, so strap in.
